Configuring Pedagogy and Community Culture for Academic Integrity in Kazakhstani Universities [Abstract]
    (M. Narikbayev KAZGUU University, Nazarbayev University, 2019-05-16) Soltys, Dennis; O'Donnell, Loretta; Gimranova, Dilbar; Priestley, Duncan; Qoraboyev, Ikboljon
Traditional compliance policing methods to ensure academic integrity tend relatively to ignore the developmental approach, and to ignore whether learning is actually occurring. Cheating and plagiarism indicate a breakdown in pedagogy, which is better addressed by student development than policing. Notwithstanding, the knowledge economy creates both a need for and opportunity to promote academic integrity within a developmental approach, which emphasizes analytical thought and rewards acquisition of soft skills. Quality assurance can be achieved by means followed in conventional institutional accreditations.

In higher education governance and policy, case studies of university as organizations are a conventional approach of doing research. When research is completed and articles and conference presentations are in the process of disseminating research findings, sometimes researchers choose to name the organizations that they studied. But often times, researchers choose not to disclose the actual names of the organizations they have researched. In the latter case, universities in research outputs are typically named by some labels or they are given fictional titles. In any case, whether the researchers disclose the name of the university or not, organizations need to be described since they each in a case study would constitute a case.

Citation and referencing should not be taken for granted. To be scholarly, one must follow a conventional citation and referencing format. The reference list must be accurate and free from mistakes. By doing so, the bibliographic information cited in the research becomes valid. This ongoing research used citation analysis to share the initial results found in tracking the common errors generated by graduate students in referencing. In particular, the research will focus on APA style as this is the citation guide prescribed by the school.

Using a Reading Journal to Develop Source Use Competencies for Academic Writing [Abstract]
    (M. Narikbayev KAZGUU University, Nazarbayev University, 2019-05-16) Anderson, Rheanne; Molyneux, Elizabeth; O'Donnell, Loretta; Gimranova, Dilbar; Priestley, Duncan; Qoraboyev, Ikboljon
Appropriate incorporation of source material in academic writing can be challenging for university students, and those who struggle to demonstrate competency in this area can run into issues with plagiarism. Pedagogic approaches to reducing plagiarism often take the complementary routes of explicit teaching on academic integrity combined with instruction on source use and referencing (Pecorari and Petric, 2014). This presentation will describe an instructional tool used in an Academic Reading course on a pre-Masters program for students entering an EMI university in Kazakhstan.

While academic integrity is closely associated with plagiarism, there is another peculiar error that academics tend to forego, that is the neglect to verify proper formatting of a reference list based on a particular citation format. The purpose of the study is to trace, review and analyze the reference list of selected master’s thesis submitted in the Nazarbayev University (NU) Repository from the five schools at the NU namely the Graduate School of Education (GSE), Graduate School of Public Policy (GSPP), School of Engineering (SEng), School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) and School of Science and Technology (SST).

Research ethics to the conduct of social science research in Kazakhstan: reflections on collecting data for Phd. thesis in Kazakhstani educational organizations
(KAZGUU University, Nazarbayev University, 2018-05-18) Makhmetova, Zhadyra
Although there are various definitions of what is ethics in research, in general, it can be referred as a code of professional conduct of a researcher. Researcher’s code of conduct is usually prescribed by Institutional Review Board of an institution, or by other entitled organizations. In order to receive IRB’s permission to conduct a study, the researcher needs to prepare a research proposal where he or she has a detailed discussion of guaranteeing confidentiality, respect, honesty, and integrity in the study. Thus, planning ethically responsible research is a core part of the researcher’s work, and ethical questions need to be thoroughly planned.
