The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) adopted the United Nations Agenda 2030 to demonstrate the key role of libraries as engines for sustainable development. The purpose of this study is to motivate and encourage academic libraries to take a leading role in their communities to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of Agenda 2030 and to stimulate further research on the topic. This study identifies, for the first time, outstanding examples of sustainable libraries from all over the world. It focuses on academic libraries that took part in the IFLA Green Library Award competition or those that published their project as an SDG story on the Library Map of the World. The examples given depict how libraries and access to information address the demands across all SDGs. Tools such as a checklist, a short literature review and relevant websites complement the study. Academic libraries and librarians can learn by example and adopt strategies and solutions proven to be successful in other countries. By doing so, they can join a global movement to act as exemplars, educators, and enablers for sustainable development (IFLA, 2018).Item Open Access Academic Library Sessions: Experiences and Challenges of Nazarbayev University Library(7th International Conference on Emerging Global Trends in University Library Development (Library Connect 2018), 2018-05-23) Zvonareva, Darya; Yap, Joseph M.Item Open Access Academic Library Sessions: Experiences and Challenges of Nazarbayev University Library(7th International Conference on Emerging Global Trends in University Library Development (Library Connect 2018), 2018-05-23) Zvonareva, Darya; Yap, Joseph M.The Reference Department of the Nazarbayev University Library is responsible for the development and delivery of library sessions and workshops. The specific objectives are as follows: to describe how the above mentioned tools adapted to the local environment and needs of the Nazarbayev University Library; and, discuss if and how decision making in NUL can be improved using these tools as well as providing suggestions and recommendations for libraries in Central Asia thinking of adapting these tools to their needs. The authors believe that the topic of this article, specifically adapting technologies in libraries, is closely related to the themes of the conference, especially to trends and tools in academic library services.Item Open Access Allocating Collections Budgets in a Changing Environment(University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2017-05) Way, DougItem Open Access Approaches and Techniques for Vendor Negotiations(University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2017-05) Way, DougItem Open Access Azerbaijan Bibliography, Modern International Databases on Natural Sciences: Formation, Structure and Use in the Azerbaijan’s Library and Bibliography Practice(Nazarbayev University Library, 2020-09) Hajiyeva, Khayalaciences, the investigation of their methodological structure and usage issues of these databases in Azerbaijan and in the world. Methodology. The research examines two areas of bibliography on natural sciences: 1. The National bibliography of Azerbaijan, and 2. Modern library databases, and their benefits to structure methodology, and data modeling. The history of formation of libraries and information resources on natural sciences in Azerbaijan, and the improvement stages they have taken during this period have been highlighted. Findings. Results show that asides from the advantages of databases and the success of library databases in library practice in the world, there were also difficulties and problems of creating the local bibliographic database for the natural sciences. Originality. Examples and experiences of local libraries are discussed in the paper and compared with the world’s leading library and bibliography practices. It covers scientific research on the principles of creating global electronic bibliographic databases on natural sciences, the principles of structural formation and the use of information resources in this area. The article reports the development of modern electronic bibliographic databases and their perspectives in Azerbaijan and abroad.Item Open Access Bibliographic Description of Documents in the Historical Context(7th International Conference on Emerging Global Trends in University Library Development (Library Connect 2018), 2018-05-23) Tukubayeva, KarimaBibliographic description as a result of the centuries-old knowledge of the document at various stages of development is the basis of bibliographic information and one of the points of access to information resources. The aim of this paper is to reveal the peculiarities of the development of the bibliographic description of documents at various historical stages and to determine ways of improving bibliographic description on the basis of world trends. The study used comparative analysis of the experience of some countries in the development of standardization in the field of cataloging. The history of the bibliographic description has evolved in accordance with the trend of the times, adapting to new technologies and social demands of the scientific community. The whole historical development of the bibliographic description led to the need for its standardization. The most important problem was the development of unified international standards for bibliographic description and the alignment of national standards with international standards. Using a single method of bibliographic description unifies approaches in the field of cataloging information resources. The theoretical significance of the research lies in the fact that it reveals the essence of bibliographic description and the principles of its compilation. The historical and methodological aspects of the bibliographic description of the document are investigated beginning with its inception in antiquity and ending – in contemporary times. Practical significance and implementation of the research results consist in determining trends and prospects for the modern development of bibliographic description.Item Restricted Book Donation: Ideas to Enrich your Collection and Community(Nazarbayev University Library, 2020-09) Shubina, IrinaPurpose. The purpose of this paper is to describe the efforts of the library to enrich the fund and to find the ways to develop library collection free of charge. This paper will describe how libraries can supply library users with the materials they need, offering students the chances to be better prepared for their research and lessons and to improve the educational process at the university. Methodology. The assessment used the quantity of the books received by the library free of charge and quantity of the partners, with whom are established good relationships. Findings. It is necessary to underline that the search of book donors is a very important direction in library activities and can be very fruitful for library users. Good library collection gives students an opportunity to receive better education, which would ultimately improve their lives and ensure a brighter future. However, it is not easy to find the book donors, also there are problems with ship customs and it needed to resolve them. Research limitations/implications. While one of the goals of the academic library is to support and enrich the resources and services the library provides to students and professors it is necessary to find novel ways of library collection development. Even in today’s high-tech world, traditional hard copy books still have the amazing ability to offer inspiration, insight and education. Originality. The extension of professional international book networks. To explore organizations which would be happy to donate gently used books to good use.Item Open Access Building Bridges: The Cooperation of Polish Academic Libraries(The 8th International Conference on Emerging Global Trends in University Library Development (ICEGTULD 2019), 2019-06-06) Slaska, Katarzyna; Metzger, Lawrence; Yap, Joseph M.; Dautova, Anar; Tendik, YermekpayevaThe purpose of the paper is to present the value of libraries’ cooperation on the example of Polish academic libraries. Libraries all over the world have been cooperating on collection building, shared cataloging, and resource sharing for many years. However, cooperation plays especially an important role in libraries since the information explosion in the 20th century. Nowadays, the libraries put emphasis on the role of computerized library networks involving electronic catalogs, digital libraries, integrated library systems, shared databases, internet connections, and shared applications. The presentation examines three areas of Polish academic libraries cooperation: (1) shared cataloging in the frame of NUKAT - a union catalog containing over 4 million descriptions of documents held by 170 Polish academic and scientific libraries, (2) reciprocal borrowing program for Warsaw academic libraries (BiblioWawa), a joint project of 7 Warsaw academic libraries, which provides the Warsaw academic community with convenient access to circulating library resources of the cooperating libraries, and (3) works and activities of the Directors of Polish Academic Libraries’ Conference. The paper presents not only the success of library cooperation, but also the difficulties and barriers. Experience of academic and scientific libraries in Poland indicates that cooperation, however is not always easy, and is inevitable for the libraries. The best way of achieving good results in cooperation is by building bridges between libraries – establishing consortia and networks which enables libraries to work together more effectively and efficiently. Discussed in the paper are examples of experiences from Polish libraries in the field of cooperation. It contains many useful information for librarians responsible for library cooperation. They can also serve as a source of inspiration for academic libraries from other countries.Item Open Access Building Bridges: The Cooperation of Polish Academic Libraries(The 8th International Conference on Emerging Global Trends in University Library Development (ICEGTULD 2019), 2019-06-07) Slaska, KatarzynaItem Open Access Can We Get It? : An Assessment of the Effectiveness of the Suggest-A-Purchase Facility of the De La Salle University (DLSU) Libraries(The 8th International Conference on Emerging Global Trends in University Library Development (ICEGTULD 2019), 2019-06-06) Manabat, April; Metzger, Lawrence; Yap, Joseph M.; Dautova, Anar; Tendik, YermekpayevaWith the emergence of technology as a tool to provide efficient library service to patrons, this study seeks to determine the effectiveness of the “Suggest-A-Purchase” (SAP) facility of the DLSU Libraries in terms of reaching out to the academic community for purposes of resource collection building. With the theme “University Library Services and Resources for Research and Innovation”, this paper provides insights on the effectiveness of the DLSU Libraries’ “Suggest-A Purchase” (SAP) facility in reaching out to the academic community to solicit their participation and input on building academic resource collections. In addition, this paper aims to ascertain the number of library materials procured through the facility over the last two (2) academic years and analyze how it has contributed to the library collections. Moreover, this study will also provide recommendations on how this service could be further improved. A survey was conducted among selected faculty and other prospective users of the library. Purposive sampling was used to determine the effectiveness of the facility. In addition, statistics were compiled on the number of requests received, orders procured, and user-friendly design of the facility to provide a more compelling rationale for this undertaking. Based on the survey conducted, it was discovered that faculty members were the most common users of the facility in requesting materials which they needed. Moreover, they found the facility effective in reaching out to the academic community as it provides a status report on requests from the time they were received up to when the material is already available in the library for use. A significant number of materials were also procured from the requests receive from that facility. In addition, recommendation as to providing a timeline or date when will the material be available was also noted to further improve the service. There has been a dearth of literature written about library services in the acquisition of resource materials and collection building especially in the Philippine setting. This paper is unique in seeking to determine the effectiveness of having a facility where patrons can simply request materials they want the library to procure so as to make them readily accessible.Item Open Access Can We Get It? : An Assessment of the Effectiveness of the Suggest-A-Purchase Facility of the De La Salle University (DLSU) Libraries(The 8th International Conference on Emerging Global Trends in University Library Development (ICEGTULD 2019), 2019-06-06) Manabat, AprilItem Open Access Challenges of International Librarians: Knowledge Sharing from Filipino Librarians Working Across Asia(7th International Conference on Emerging Global Trends in University Library Development (Library Connect 2018), 2018-05-23) Cruz III, Ricardo; Cruz, Karen Vanessa; Yap, Joseph M.The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Student Learning and Information Literacy Committee (SLILC) recently published a white paper on Global Perspectives on Information Literacy: Fostering a Dialogue for International Understanding with a chapter focused on Asia and Oceania. In that chapter Dorner (2017) has argued that some teaching tools developed by Western countries may not be appropriate for Asian countries. In particular he noted that Sri Lankan and Vietnamese academic librarians have a lower status compared to academic staff and that this kind of perception may lead to an unsuccessful working relationship that would in turn hinder student learning since Information Literacy (IL) involves working closely with faculty, teachers or tutors. Librarians have always struggled to be recognized as part of the team to hone student academic performance. This paper will provide information literacy strategies and partnerships involving Filipino librarians working across Asia. As Filipino educators with their own cultural backgrounds and limitations, how can they best fit in their international working environment? How do they initiate collaboration with the faculty members and teachers? What were the cultural challenges and factors before and during the implementation of an IL program and how were they able to cope with it? What IL standards or models are they following to make their IL programs effective? How supportive is the administration in their programs? These are just some of the questions that the paper will try to answer in the three Asian countries described below.Item Open Access Challenges of International Librarians: Knowledge Sharing from Filipino Librarians Working Across Asia(7th International Conference on Emerging Global Trends in University Library Development (Library Connect 2018), 2018-05-23) Cruz III, Ricardo; Cruz, Karen; Yap, Joseph M.
