The global information economy is transforming the way people connect with each other, learn new things and contribute to the knowledge society. This paper explores the different virtual services platforms currently adopted in 131 subject university libraries in Kazakhstan. Using case-analysis the researcher explored deeper on how virtual services contribute to the development of research and academic endeavors of Graduate School of Business students. Findings of the study revealed that less than half of the universities in Kazakhstan have VLS; however, the value of VLS is explicitly cited by respondents. A Citation Analysis of Master’s Theses in the Field of Education(Dnipro National University of Railway Transport named after Academician V. Lazaryan, 2019-10-07) Yap, Joseph M.; Kozhayeva, AltynayThe strength of the collection whether print or e-resources depends on how well we can cater to the needs of our users. Although we can’t provide a complete and very extensive collection, we can study the current resources so we can fully maximize what we have and pin-point the areas where we need to improve. This study will employ citation analysis to trace the student’s information needs and to monitor the types of sources they use whether they utilize the print and/or e-resources collection of the library. This is an attempt to review the journal titles referenced by the students in their graduate thesis. The librarians will verify the authoritativeness of the material versus the amount of suspected predatory journals included in the reference list. The study will also be the basis to improve and further develop the library’s e-resource collection.Item Open Access The amazing library race: Developing the students MIL skills through games: the case of the Philippines and Kazakhstan(UNESCO, 2019-10-07) Yap, Joseph M.; Penaflor, JaniceIn this time of disinformation and misinformation, the libraries remain to be a reliable source of truthful and factual information. As they fervently support the agenda of lifelong learning, libraries recognize that there are various approaches that redefine the process of student learning. Admittedly, librarians need to be more creative in motivating the post-millennial students to help them fully develop their Media and Information Literacy (MIL) skills. This paper explores how games are adopted and utilized by academic libraries as an interactive approach to entice students to learn the essential MIL competencies. It presents how games could be a viable tool not only to deliver information literacy instruction in a collaborative learning environment but to also effectively engage and attract students to use the library resources and services. While the use of games is not novel, the way it is delivered and re-purposed to meet the MIL competencies is vital in today’s young generation of learners. In addition, this presentation highlights how two academic libraries in two separate countries were able to embed MIL skills through a race challenge. Furthermore, this paper discusses the practical steps undertaken in the preparation of the game as well as the observations made during and after the activity was conducted. With this, other libraries may gain insights and best practices on how to leverage this method to further champion MIL in their own communities. Item Open Access DOCUMENTING THE CATALOGING PRACTICES AND POLICIES AMONG SELECTED LIBRARIES IN KAZAKHSTAN(University Library at a New Stage of Social Communications Development (UniLibNSD) International Conference, 2021-10-08) Manabat, AprilA survey was conducted among selected librarian catalogers in Kazakhstan to determine the current cataloging practices and policies being employed in their respective libraries. Responses suggested that cataloging is still one of the important aspects of the library work even with the emergence of electronic resources. While many are still applying traditional standards such as MARC, AACR, LC and DDC in their descriptive cataloging and authority works, catalogers were interested in new standards such as RDA and BIBFRAME. Finally, interests in having a unified online catalog as well as more trainings on the field of cataloging and metadata librarianship in the future has also been considered by these libraries to improve the quality of their cataloging work.
