Design of Multi-Story Hotel “Altyn Fiesta” in San Antonio, Texas, USA

Abstract

This Capstone 2 project presents the preliminary design of an eight-story hotel with three basement levels in San Antonio, Texas. The goal was to create a solid basis for the detailed architectural, structural, geotechnical, environmental and project management work. The building includes three podium levels for public and leisure functions, five hotel floors, and underground parking. The site’s windy climate and shallow soft clay deposits introduce specific structural and geotechnical challenges. Structurally, drift and internal forces were calculated; structural members were designed and serviceability was checked with the aim of designing a structurally safe and sound building. The geotechnical analysis covered borehole interpretation, soil classification, settlement and bearing capacity using common methods. Results showed that shallow and mat foundations cannot support the required loads, so deep foundations were utilized. Environmental Engineering was focused on dealing with the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) that was generated by residents of Altyn Fiesta Hotel and office workers for the Capstone II project. The sections below were designed to compute suitable waste management options in order for the system to operate smoothly.
