Design of a 9-story “Adzharat” business-hotel in New York City, USA

Abstract

The purpose of the capstone project was to develop a complete design for a 9-story “Adzharat” business-hotel located in New York City, USA. The project includes architectural, structural, geotechnical, environmental, and construction management features within a single multidisciplinary design. This proposed building is designed in accordance with the International and NYC standards, such as IBC 2019, ASCE 7-10, and ACI 318-14. The architectural design emphasized functional, accessible, fire, and building performance, in addition to sustainability requirements. The structural design process consisted of the design of a wind loading, serviceability, and durability analysis of a high-rise building for an urban location. Several lateral force-resisting systems and concrete mix alternatives were assessed to determine the most suitable alternatives in terms of strength, durability, sustainability, and cost. Geotechnical investigations and foundation design were performed based on the subsurface conditions of the site. The proposed hotel development was economically feasible as shown through the economic analysis, taking into account construction costs, inflation, and expected operational performance.
