Abstract
This capstone project presents the design of an industrial-scale plant for the production of 1,3-butadiene from n-butane via catalytic dehydrogenation, targeting an annual output of 90,000 tons. The process leverages a Ni-Fe-Co-Bi-O/γ-Al₂O₃ catalyst, optimized for high selectivity and yield. Key unit operations include preheating, reaction in fixed-bed reactors, multistage compression, hydrogen separation, and extractive distillation to achieve 99.5% purity. The plant is strategically located in Taraz, Kazakhstan, benefiting from Special Economic Zone advantages, including tax incentives and infrastructure. Economic analysis indicates a total capital investment of $154.6 million, with a projected payback period of 2.4 years and a positive net present value after 9 years showing a great economic viability of the project. Environmental and safety measures address waste stream incineration, energy recovery, and regulatory compliance.
