Abstract
This thesis focuses on investigating the hydrogen (H₂) generation potential within the ophiolite massif of Kempirsai. A central focus is placed on how the process of serpentinization produces naturally-occurring hydrogen gas. In order to investigate the mineralogical and geochemical properties of ultramafic rocks, including peridotite, dunite, and serpentine; X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), Thin-Section Analysis, and Gas Measurements were used. The results from this investigation indicate that while the rates of serpentinization have declined significantly over time (as evidenced by low Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ ratios in the XRF data); it appears that substantial amounts of hydrogen gas was produced during previous times of higher rates of serpentinization. Furthermore, both the Diamond-Pearl Mine and Bolashaq Mine demonstrate similar mineral compositions, which implies that they are likely to generate similar quantities of hydrogen gas. These similarities highlight a clear requirement for ongoing monitoring and safety assessments at both locations, as hydrogen gas accumulation can create an environment conducive to explosive out-gassing.
