Item Open Access UNDERSTANDING FACULTY PERCEPTIONS OF THE CURRENT STATE OF HIGHER EDUCATION GOVERNANCE IN KAZAKHSTAN(2012-08) Sarinzhipov, Asian; Sagintayeva, A.; Kurakbayev, Kairat"In this paper, we have examined faculty perceptions of the current state of higher education governance in Kazakhstan. The purpose was to analyse the faculty's opinions and attitudes towards governance in their institutions. Several conclusions can be drawn from the findings. The first is that faculty was mostly unsatisfied with their level of involvement in governance, particularly in terms of the ways in which they communicate with upper management. Faculty would like to see proper feedback mechanisms in their communication channels with Vice Rectors and Rectors. Interestingly, the majority of faculty respondents claim that contemporary governance systems cannot respond appropriately to new social and academic realities. Most faculty members take their inactiveness for granted as they do not feel that their decisions will have an impact on institutional governance. However, the research has shown that faculty members are involved at the departmental level and feel comfortable about that." - ...Item Open Access A FEW GLOBAL TRENDS AND POINTS OF COMMONALITY IN QUALITY ASSURANCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION(2012-08) Ruby, AlanIn this brief paper author offers a public policy perspective on quality assurance in higher education. The selected data is then classified into different segments. Segmentation is driven by preliminary analysis and business need. The next step is to study the relationship between the independent and dependent variables for each predictor. Weaker predictors may be discarded at this stage. Transformations of variables are done if needed. After that, stepwise logistic regression is applied on the clean data which eventually produces the model. Model fit statistics are observed. A model that rank orders and displays the best separation from good to bad is considered as the best.Item Open Access Nitrogen-crafted activated carbon for removing nitrate from water(Nazarbayev University, 2013) Douglass, E. F.; Mikhalovsky, S. V.; Cannon, F.The proposed research will develop cation- and anion-selective materials based on nitrogen-doped redox-sensitive granulated activated carbon, NGAC, with polypyrrole moieties that can be regenerated electrochemically, and thus will not require concentrated (2 M NaCl) brines for regeneration. Redoxsensitive nitrogen-grafted activated carbons would have a positive charge that attracts nitrate when oxidized, and neutral charge that releases nitrate when reduced. Electrochemical regeneration of NGACs would allow their re-use through multiple cycles in a manner that would be economically and technically practical.
