Production of humic substances from Zaysan brown coal

In this research project, humic acids were obtained from activated coal samples by hydroxide and pyrophosphate methods. Activation was done using hydrochloric (HCl) and sulfuric (H2SO4) acids. Quantitative analysis shows that the optimal conditions that give the maximum yield of humic acids are activation by sulfuric acid with 1:8 ratio of solid to liquid phases, temperature of 40°C and extraction by pyrophosphate method. Coal samples were prepared according to the state standard 10742-71. The coal samples were activated by HCl and H2SO4 with solid to liquid ratio of 1:5, 1:8, and 1:10. The activation stage was performed at 25°C and 40°C. After the activation stage humic acids were extracted by hydroxide and pyrophosphate methods according to the state standard 9517-94.

Quantifying water circulation in Burabay national park: towards an evaluation of potential solutions to limit lake shallowing

This study is the preliminary phase of a three-year project. Its goal is to provide basic original hydrological and hydrogeological data to the scientific community about Burabay National Nature Park (BNNP) and its lakes. The major lakes of the Park are Ulken Shabakty, Shortan and Burabay. The area is experiencing a great anthropogenic load due to water uptake from the lakes for supply needs, which causes the water level decline. The hydrological study is necessary and important for the management of BNNP. The objective of the study is to analyze water balance of the lakes from 1991 to 2012 and identify the main hydrologic components, which affect water level.

Design, synthesis and characterization of self-assembled monodisperse magnetic nanoparticles

Using a co-precipitation method, Fe3O4 nanoparticle surfaces were modified with oleic acid or PEG.This method yields particles with broad size distribution. MNPs synthesized by thermal decomposition method appear to have narrow size distribution and monodispersity.

Hibrid energy generation with pumped hydro storage

This project proposes an installation of a demonstrative site of hydro energy storage system as a way to effectively accumulate excess energy generated from renewable sources in a form of the gravitational potential energy of pumped and stored water. Hydropower is then extracted from flowing water by means of a turbine as a useful mechanical power, which, in its turn, is converted into electricity using an electric generator.
