Item Open Access Design of small-scale tilt-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle(Nazarbayev University, 2014) Kassymov, A.; Orazbayev, D.; Akhatova, A.; Adair, D.; Ali, Md. H.Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is the aircraft without a human pilot aboard. UAVs are subcategorized as RC Models, which are controlled by a pilot via transmitter-receiver system, and Drones, which are fully autonomous. They are used for different military missions, such as surveillance and reconnaissance. They are widening their use in civil areas, for example, search and rescue operations, filmmaking, remote sensing of chemical leaks, crop spraying and monitoring in agriculture, etc. Most of the UAVs are either of airplane (fixed-wing) type or copter (Vertical Take Off and Landing) type. The aim of this project is to design the UAV that will combine the hovering abilities of multicopters with the endurance of fixed-wing aircrafts.Item Open Access Developing monitoring system for long-distance pipeline leakage incorporating fusion of conflicting evidences(Nazarbayev University, 2014) Adair, D.; Emara-Shabaik, H. E.; Jaeger, M.When transporting petroleum products, the use of long-distance pipelines have become commonplace, due to their inherent efficiency and economy. However, such pipe systems often leak due to corrosion, natural destruction, and, natural aging and weathering, causing harm to the environment, fire etc. The ability to detect leakage with certainty and quickly is therefore very important. In this work, leakage is detected using a combination of a hydraulic method and Dezert-Smarandache theory.Item Open Access Hemodynamic CAE design of blood-wetted medical devices used in treatment of cardiovascular disease(Nazarbayev University, 2013) Rojas-Solorzano, L.; Saliev, T.; Adair, D.; Finol, E.Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) leads to the major number of deaths in the USA and Europe (European Heart Network, 2008; US National Center for Health Statistics, 2012). In Kazakhstan, CVD represents also the first cause of fatalities (WHO, 2011) with 346.6 per 100.000 of population by 2011, ranking Kazakhstan in 5th place in the world. Despite the best action to reduce CVD being a lifestyle change, medicine and surgical/non-surgical treatment is also needed for severe cases. This project is partnered with the Center of Life Sciences (CLS), a center of excellence at Nazarbayev University created to ¨transform medicine and healthcare in Kazakhstan through innovative scientific research and rapid translation of breakthrough discoveries.Item Open Access Thermal management of LI-ION battery packs(Nazarbayev University, 2014) Adair, D.; Ismailov, K.; Bakenov, ZhumabayA design for the thermal management of Lithium-ion battery packing as used in hybrid and electric vehicles has been developed. The design satisfies all thermal and physical issues relating to the battery packs used in vehicles including operating temperature range and volume, and, should increase battery cycle life, and, charge and discharge performances. Particular attention was devoted to the thermal management of batteries operating in extreme temperature conditions.Item Open Access Transverse free vibration of rotating non-uniform euler-bernoulli beams using the adomian modified decomposition method(Nazarbayev University, 2014) Adair, D.The dynamic behavior of non-uniform rotating beams is of practical interest since it is widely used in many engineering applications such as helicopter rotor blades, spinning space structures and gas turbine blades.
