dc.description.abstractWe study the algebraic set of nearly commuting matrices defined by the vanishing of the off-diagonal entries of the commutator matrix XY-YX. We prove that, over a field of prime characteristic, its coordinate ring is F-pure for n =4 in all characteristics except p = 2. We also present several conjectures for the case n = 5.
