| dc.description.abstract | The organ-on-a-chip (OoC) technology has experienced exponential growth, driven by the need for better understanding of in-organ processes and new approaches to improve human health, such as in vitro alternatives to animal testing. This research aims to study the flow behavior and filling characteristics in lung- and liver-on-a-chip devices using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis and experimental verification of computational and theoretical results. Three microfluidic chip designs are investigated in this work. The geometrical modeling was conducted using SolidWorks computer-aided design package, while computational analysis was performed in Comsol Multiphysics and ANSYS software packages. The main focus was on analyzing the fluid flow behavior and flooding characteristics with the aim of subsequently improving the functionality of the studied OoCs. It is hypothesized that the simulations conducted on the lung- and liver-on-a-chip will adequately capture the behavior and functional models of fluid flows observed in relevant experiments. Initial and resulting designs were tested experimentally, with the lung-on-a-chip design integrated with a nanofiber membrane. The Brinkman Equation interface in COMSOL multiphysics was used to accurately model the flow in a lung-on-a-chip device, providing insights into the behavior of the fluids in the device and suggesting optimal experimental conditions for seeding cells on the membrane. This research has successfully analyzed fluid flow behavior and filling characteristics in lung- and liver-on-a-chip devices, offering valuable insights for design refinement and improved functionality. Future studies can rely the experimental verification and design of the chip. | eng |
| kaz |
