Abstract
This thesis studies how beliefs over possible outcomes can be designed to increase an individual’s curiosity and willingness to acquire non-instrumental information. Existing theoretical frameworks represent curiosity through uncertainty but generally do not specify which form of uncertainty drives it, while empirical evidence suggests a relationship between curiosity and confidence. This thesis interprets intermediate confidence as binary uncertainty over whether one’s leading guess is correct and distinguishes it from uncertainty over which possible outcome is true. It develops a two-component model in which both sources of uncertainty contribute to curiosity.
The model is applied to promotional materials for an upcoming mystery film, where a viewer forms beliefs over Npossible suspects, exactly one of whom is the true antagonist. Because the identity of the antagonist is revealed only in the full film, the designer chooses the feasible post-promotion belief distribution that maximizes the viewer’s curiosity and willingness to watch the film. The optimal distribution generally assigns the leading suspect a probability between the uniform probability 1/N and one half, depending on the relative weights of the two components. Greater weight on uncertainty about the antagonist’s identity moves the distribution toward uniformity, while greater weight on uncertainty about whether the leading guess is correct moves the leading probability toward one half.
An extension allows the designer to choose the number of possible suspects. Although additional suspects increase uncertainty, they also raise cognitive costs, making the optimal number finite. The model provides a broader framework for understanding how information providers can shape beliefs to stimulate curiosity and information demand.
