Abstract

This article explores the concept of the horse (жылқы) in Kazakh and broader Turkic culture through historical, ethnographic, and linguistic perspectives. Drawing on archaeological evidence, medieval texts, and comparative studies, it highlights the horse’s central role in nomadic civilization, warfare, and daily life. The study reviews scholarly contributions on equine terminology across Turkic languages, emphasizing the richness of horse-related vocabulary in Kazakh. It also examines symbolic, ritual, and sacred dimensions of the horse in folklore and ethnography. Overall, the article demonstrates the enduring cultural, linguistic, and spiritual significance of the horse in Turkic heritage.
