Abstract

Methyl tert-butyl Ether (MTBE) is a crucial industrial compound with widespread applications as an octane enhancer and fuel oxygenate, contributing significantly to cleaner combustion and reduced emissions. Its global demand is influenced by evolving fuel standards and environmental regulations. This capstone project focuses on the design of a chemical plant for the industrial production of MTBE in Kazakhstan, aiming to contribute to the regional supply. The primary goal is to produce Grade B MTBE, meeting "ST RK 2533-2021" standards, from methanol and isobutylene, with annual production rate of 563.5 kilotons. The project encompasses a comprehensive plant development, from raw material handling to final product, integrating a reactor and three distillation columns. Process simulation and optimization were performed using Aspen Plus v14, taking economic viability, energy efficiency, and environmental effects into consideration. The plant is projected to be economically feasible with a payback period of 4.28 years.
