Abstract

This study investigates the linguistic motivation underlying horse-related terminology in the Kazakh language. Drawing on theoretical distinctions between etymology and motivation, the article outlines how phonetic, morphological, and semantic factors shape the naming of animals. It reviews earlier research on motivated naming in natural objects, highlighting classifications based on sound imitation, physical features, habitat, behavior, and utilitarian functions. Special attention is given to the term жабағы (foal aged six months to one year), whose semantic development is traced across Turkic and Mongolic languages, demonstrating historical shifts and phonological transformations. The paper also examines color-based horse names, such as сауысқан ала and ит ала, showing how metaphorical associations with birds and dogs inform semantic motivation. Overall, the findings reveal that Kazakh horse terminology reflects a complex interplay of cultural perception, phonosemantic patterns, and ethnolinguistic factors, underscoring the importance of motivation theory in understanding lexical development.
