Item Open Access Operating experience with the laser ion source relevant the HIF application(21st International Symposium on Heavy Ion Inertial Fusion. Autonomous Organization of Education “Nazarbayev University”, 2016-07-18) Okamura, Masahiro; Ikeda, Shunsuke; Kanesue, TakeshiSince March 2014, a laser ion source (LIS) has been used to provide high brightness low charge state heavy ion beams for regular routine operation of the hadron accelerator complex in Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL)[1]. The peak current and pulse width of the typical beams from the LIS are several hundreds of microampere and about 200 microseconds, respectively. Of course, these specifications cannot be directly applied to the HIF. However, only by reducing the plasma drift distance to one tenth, the beam current and pulse width will become 1000 times and 1/10 respectively and these values are not far from the HIF’s requirements. Therefore, it would be useful to discuss some operational difficulties and to investigate what should be improved in the existing LIS in BNL toward the HIF application...Item Open Access Readiness of HIF Using the Single Pass RF Driver(21st International Symposium on Heavy Ion Inertial Fusion. Autonomous Organization of Education “Nazarbayev University”, 2016-07-18) Burke, Robert J.; Azim, Mansour Hadji; Helsley, Charles E.; Burke, Alexander T.Readiness for a concerted push to power production was the underlying theme from the inaugural HIF Workshop in 1976 through the review of ICF programs by DOE’s Energy Research and Advisory Board in 1979. Using John Lawson’s 1987 paper “Whither Heavy Ion Fusion?” [1] as a foil, this paper discusses the continuing vitality of the argument for HIF’s readiness against the backdrop that this vision is not in evidence today, having been occluded by political policies causing diversion of the HIF community into peripheral science that, although excellent, is in fact not required to complete the development of a HIF energy source...Item Open Access Recent progress of coherent beam combining Kumgang Laser (0.4J@10kHz/10ns)(21st International Symposium on Heavy Ion Inertial Fusion. Autonomous Organization of Education “Nazarbayev University”, 2016-07-18) Kong, Hong Jin; Park, Sangwoo; Cha, Seongwoo; Lee, Hwihyeong; Oh, Jungsuk; Choi, Soungwoong; Churn, Kilsung; Kim, Jom Sool; Lee, Bong JuA coherent beam combining is the most promising technique to achieve a high output energy and a high repetition rate laser system with a good beam quality [1]. It has been demonstrated experimentally that the coherent beam combination using self-phase-controlled stimulated Brillouin scattering phase conjugate mirror (SC-SBS-PCM) is the simplest coherent beam combination method [2-3]. For an average output power of a kW range, the experimental verification of coherent beam combination is now underway by the Kumgang laser [4-5]...
