Item Open Access Facts matter: how to get away with infobesity during infodemic(Philippine Association for Media and Information Literacy (PAMIL) and the Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL) Asia Pacific Chapter, 2020-05-15) Yap, Joseph M.As MIL practitioners, we are expected to be critical evaluators of media sources and information, thus this presentation aims to strengthen our skills and attitudes to help us identify and evaluate the legitimacy of the source before we do something about it; exemplify as role models to our students, peers, and family members by acknowledging facts rather than propagate misleading information; and find ways to control infobesity when we are exposed to it.Item Open Access Information Literacy: Teaching and Instructing at a Social Distance(Bicol University Library System, 2020-08-04) Yap, Joseph M.Item Open Access PRACTICE WHAT WE PREACH(Limerick Institute of Technology, Ireland, 2020-12-09) Yap, Joseph M.The Nazarbayev University Library is committed to re-tooling librarians and specifically its subject librarians (SL) to enhance their competencies in teaching Information Literacy (IL). Collegial support and mentoring are needed to ensure everyone is informed of the new trends and development in IL. With occasional turn-over of library staff, the challenge is to train novice professionals for uninterrupted services. IL modules are currently in place yet there is a need for constant updating to ensure the quality of IL teaching. A review of IL frameworks is needed to provide them with a good foundation. IL supports academic integrity and it should be discussed in the schools and universities as early as possible. This paper will explore the current status of librarians in terms of their working knowledge in referencing and related academic integrity aspects as part of the research process. Professional development programs are constantly developed to strengthen the competencies of librarians. Better library research support will happen if librarians are equipped with the right knowledge and skills.Item Restricted WE’RE GETTING ENGAGED! FOSTERING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN A VIRTUAL LIBRARY INSTRUCTION(Western Balkan Information and Media Literacy Conference 2021, 2021-12-09) Manabat, AprilKeeping students engaged can be considered one of the most challenging tasks in a one-shot library instruction. Given the limited time for these kinds of sessions (usually 50 mins to an hour), it became even more apparent when librarians were forced to teach these sessions in a virtual setup as the pandemic substantially changed the mode of instruction. Fostering student engagement through the introduction of various tools and applications as well as implementing some teaching strategies during the session is now the name of the game and librarians are now expanding their horizons to incorporate these new strategies into their sessions. This presentation documents how students were kept engaged in an online library session conducted at Nazarbayev University (NU) Library. The use of various tools and applications such as Padlet, Quizziz, and Slido were implemented to ensure student engagement. In addition, the experiences of Subject Librarians including the challenges encountered and the ideas for improvement in teaching the sessions were also shared in this presentation.
