Nazarbayev University, Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstanhttp://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/6468This Master's Thesis will examine the performance of two systems. First for specific medical needles with Fiber Optic Sensors (FOS) for strain analysis. The proposed system consists of four FOS with Bragg gratings mounted at 90-degree angles on the four sides of the needle. This prototype allows for the measurement of strain along perpendicular axes from two opposing pairs of FOSs, which may then be used to estimate the shape of the needle by translating the observed strain into bending and shape sensing during the injection procedure. Thus, the strain created when the needle proceeds through several layers of tissue with varying densities will be utilized to estimate the form. Since the injection of needle procedures, such as operating with catheters and applicators are mostly blind procedures, needle position precision and correctness are essential. As a result, on the basis of this Master Thesis, the performance of medical needle injection procedures may be improved. Second a novel research from scratch for building 2D map of distribution of the strain for bite force measurement. This system consists distributed FOS embedded into silicone layers and 3D printed experimental rack for applying weights. The prepared prototype allows for the measurement of strain along the sensing area for further bite force measurements Keywords: Fiber Optic Sensor, Fiber Bragg gratings, strain detection, biomedical application, epidural needle.enAttribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 United StatesType of access: Gated AccessFiber Optic SensorFiber Bragg gratingsstrain detectionbiomedical applicationepidural needleFIBER OPTICS SENSORS FOR STRAIN DETECTION IN BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONSMaster's thesis
