The Modern Academic Library: Changing Times, Evolving Roles
Mamtora, Jayshree
In recent years, there have been significant changes in the role of the academic library that has had an impact on the teaching, learning and research of the university. The library has become engaged in new and innovative areas leading to a repositioning of their role and function.
In this presentation, I will explore some of the trends and developments that have led to this paradigm shift. For example, providing more meaningful user experiences for our staff and students; enhancing the digital fluency of the user; incorporating new technologies such as artificial intelligence in processes; and partnering with researchers for improved scholarly communication, to name a few.
I will seek to highlight some of these innovations and encourage participants to reflect on the needs of their own users and how, and in what way, changes could be brought about to improve practices in their own institutions.

Developing a Competency Index for Librarians: Benchmark for Capacity Building, LIS Education, and Continuing Professional Development
Alenzuela, Reysa; Cantel, Ana Mae; Peleña, Ma. Cynthia
Competence is always an evolving issue as it needs to adapt to the transformation
in society. Library and information professionals are faced with the same societal
changes in dealing with information, technology, and services. Knowledge and
skills must also be aligned to the needs of the institution served. The development
of a competency index has been a major task of library organizations. The
American Library Association, Association of College and Research Libraries and
Online Computer Library Center have created a competency index that will guide
educators and employers on what to expect from information professionals.
However, this may not be a one-size-fits-all considering the uniqueness of
libraries based on geography, culture, language and other factors. Hence, this
case study of two associations: the Vanuatu Library Association and Southeast
Asia Theological Librarians was developed. The research describes how
the competencies of two associations were created and explains the steps in
developing a competency index that can be applied in a country or a region.

ciences, the investigation of their methodological structure and usage issues of
these databases in Azerbaijan and in the world.
Methodology. The research examines two areas of bibliography on natural
sciences:
1. The National bibliography of Azerbaijan, and
2. Modern library databases, and their benefits to structure methodology,
and data modeling. The history of formation of libraries and information
resources on natural sciences in Azerbaijan, and the improvement stages
they have taken during this period have been highlighted.
Findings. Results show that asides from the advantages of databases and
the success of library databases in library practice in the world, there were also
difficulties and problems of creating the local bibliographic database for the
natural sciences.
Originality. Examples and experiences of local libraries are discussed in the
paper and compared with the world’s leading library and bibliography practices.
It covers scientific research on the principles of creating global electronic
bibliographic databases on natural sciences, the principles of structural formation
and the use of information resources in this area. The article reports the
development of modern electronic bibliographic databases and their perspectives
in Azerbaijan and abroad.

The Role of Academic Libraries in the Formation of Information Resources in the Field of Architecture and Construction in Azerbaijan
Hajiyeva, Gunel
Purpose. The purpose of this paper is to describe the influence of academic
libraries in the formation of information resources in the field of architecture and
construction in Azerbaijan Republic. This paper will describe funds, electronic
resources, bibliographic databases and also electron catalogs which are available
in academic libraries about this field.
Methodology. The article uses complex methods that complement each other.
At the same time, documents in the field were analyzed, taking into account
the method of systematic approach, attention was paid to the theoretical and
practical analysis of the literature on the problem under study. Statistical and
chronological methods were used for researching how many academic libraries
are available in Azerbaijan and how they are working with the fields of architecture
and construction science.
Findings. Initial findings indicate that there are some important libraries that
were established in the last century and their activities are at the level of modern
requirements. They also work with huge international databases.
Practical applications. As in the case in all areas, the study of document and
information flow related to architecture and construction is directly related to
libraries. Thus, the library is one of the main and historically original information
institutions that provide public access to socially important document information,
one of the producers of information products and services.
Originality/value. Nowadays as the importance of architecture and construction
science is increasing, there is no doubt that information resources in this field
also become valuable. That is why we need to collect, organize, and create a
repository so users will have access to these data. Academic libraries fulfill its
mission.
