http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/1670
In this master’s thesis I focus on the development of social capital among Kazakhstani
youth. In particular, I aim to investigate the way people with international qualifications enrich their social capital in Astana. Upon return to Kazakhstan, the international graduates join different (sometimes multiple) social networks which are involved in a variety of activities including but not limited to charity, team building, public meetings with state officials, volunteering in orphanages. In the thesis I analyze two social groups, Bolashak Association and Astana Alumni Association, which mainly operate in Astana. I draw primarily on James Coleman’s conceptual framework, which supports an analysis of both the personal and social utility of social capital. In addition, such dimensions of social capital as bonding and bridging and Bourdieu’s concept of habitus are employed to understand the graduates’ rationale to become part of the social groups.

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/1671
This study explores the relationship between literature and the social, historical,
political and cultural themes in the literary works of the Kazakh writer Oralkhan Bȯkei. It
discusses the postcolonial aspects of Bȯkei’s literary texts and analyzes the themes of
colonialism, hybridity, ethnic nationalism, modernization and industrialization, and
postcolonial environmentalism in his works. This study argues that postcolonial readings of Oralkhan Bȯkei’s literary oeuvre can reveal anti-colonial as well as postcolonial discourses existing in post-Stalin Kazakh Soviet literature. Through applying some of the concepts of postcolonial studies such as hybridity, subalterneity, representation, mainly developed in Western scholarship, to the experience of the Kazakh society under the Soviet Union, this work attempts to explore the author’s perception of the Soviet Union as an empire and its threat in destroying the national culture of Kazakh society and Kazakh national identity.

This thesis studies Russian captivity narratives about Central Asia produced during
the nineteenth century. Focusing on the captivity theme, this thesis explores diverse
individual captivity stories written within the grand context of Russia’s expansion into
Central Asia. It aims to show that captivity narratives not only tell of the vulnerability
and uncertainty of the empire during its expansion, but also reveal the rapid shift of
power in Central Asia in the nineteenth century. They witness Russian captives’ growing
awareness of Central Asia as a site of Russia’s future colonization, and the captives’
self-awareness of their Russian and imperial identity...

Karazhanova, Inzhuna. (2016). Monstrous femininity in kazakh folklore: delineating normative and transgressive womanhood. Master's thesis. Nazarbayev University, School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/1673
Representations of the feminine as monstrous can be found in any type of
narrative from ancient mythology to modern video games. Witches, succubi, female
vampires, sirens, furies, mermaids, possessed women, ghost women, etc. represent the
female body and womanhood as Other, grotesque and abject, as well as demonise
women who live in transgression to normative constraints of a patriarchal society. This
work looks at the images of the monstrous-feminine within the Kazakh fairy tale:
Zhalmauyz Kempir, Zheztyrnaq and Albasty—and argues that how these characters are
presented, situated and treated in their narratives can tell us what is deemed
acceptable and what is considered as violation of the established gender order. Through
examining these characters, the conditions for the different representations and roles
they inhabit, as well as comparing them to idealised positive heroines, this work seeks
to identify how femininity and womanhood are represented in Kazakh folklore, and
what those representations can tell us about gender roles, relations, and attitudes to
female desire, power, autonomy and transgression of social norms.

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/1674
Temirtau is a mono-industrial post-Soviet city in Central Kazakhstan. Its large steel mill has caused serious environmental pollution for several decades already. This thesis focuses on how residents of Temirtau think about and deal with environmental and health risk. It considers how environmental discourse began to develop during the Soviet era and how it changed across the post-Soviet years, emphasizing the influence of political and cultural factors. Based on the analysis of the media discourses on environmental problems and industrial risks in Temirtau starting from the 1980s until the late 1990s, I argue that although Temirtau has not experienced natural or anthropogenic disaster such as those witnessed in Chernobyl or Fukushima, nevertheless Temirtau residents experienced a breakdown in public trust over the period from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. This breach of trust was connected with Perestroika and Glasnost.

This work analyzes how environment and society interact with each other focusing on the
case of Burabay National Park. Based on the field research and numerous interviews, this work demonstrates how seemingly disparate notions of top-down nation-building and tourism development have shaped into a site with unique attributes. One part of the picture is the puzzle of how nation-building process fostered by other variables such as tourism development and environmental awe could give a birth to completely new objects of sacral landscape that operate in terms similar to other famous pilgrimage destinations in the Central Asia. The other part is development of the informal economy and a set of principals according to which the local society has to operate in order to be competitive in the National Park. I believe that the findings of this work could significantly contribute to the as yet very limited literature on tourism development in Kazakhstan as well as provide analysis of an interesting case of a nation-building process.

This paper focuses on language ideologies of contemporary Kazakhstani young people based on fieldwork conducted in the new capital city of Astana. The Kazakhstani younger generation has complex language ideologies regarding the value of Kazakh, Russian, and English which affect young people’s use of languages in different contexts. Russian is not likely to lose its value in the near future, while the current trends promise an increase in popular support for the use of Kazakh.

This MA thesis focuses on the Central Bazaar traders in Astana that were recruited via
convenience and snowball sampling. The goal of the research is to investigate the reasons for becoming a trader, identifying factors that lead to the decision to become a trader, and the role of social networks in traders’ lives. In this paper I employ the bottom-up approach to research informal markets as opposed to macro perspective and thus I focus life stories of traders. The research fills the gap in the literature of informal markets by addressing the relationship between one’s motives and social networks in trade.

This thesis is devoted to the analysis of Kazakhstani nation branding processes. The Republic of Kazakhstan faced the need to present itself on international arena right after the country’s independence. The questions of nation branding were sidelined until the beginning of the 2000s, but they have recently received a new impetus. Academic literature on Kazakhstani nation branding tends to focus on separate advertising campaigns, thus failing to illustrate the whole mechanism of this phenomenon.

This thesis is devoted to the analysis of literary works by a number of the leading
post-Soviet Russophone Kazakhstani writers: Anuar Duisenbinov, Bakhyt Kairbekov,
Diusenbek Nakipov, Nikolai Verёvochkin, Il’ia Odegov and Iurii Serebrianskii.
Kazakhstan is a country where Russian literature has been developing quite successfully
since the collapse of the USSR. There has been a transformation of writing in Russian in
Kazakhstan since the country’s independence – with the rise of the new generation of
the writers in the 2000s, Russian literature in Kazakhstan transformed into Russophone
Kazakhstani literature. In this thesis, I argue for the difference between the younger and
older generations of the contemporary Russophone Kazakhstani writers – the latter is
focused on post-traumatic sense of loss and absence, while the former is characterized
by a more positive identification concentrated on the new national post-independent
realities of Kazakhstan...

This thesis deals with the interpretation and implementation of internationalization of
higher education in Kazakhstan at national and institutional levels. The goal of the study is to find out how internationalization of higher education is defined in the national policy
documentation and in universities’ development strategies on education, and how that
interpretation is similar/different to those appearing in academic literature, and how it is reflected in the universities’ practices of internationalization. For the purposes of the research, the exploratory mixed methods design was implemented, including conduction of (1) a framework analysis of the national policy documentation, (2) a framework analysis of some Kazakhstani national and state universities’ development strategies, (3) a series of in-depth interviews with representatives of national and state higher education institutions, and (4) an anonymous onlinesurvey among all national and state universities of Kazakhstan.

Abstract As the so-called ‘Asian Century’ unfolds, Central Asian countries are increasingly directing their foreign relations eastward. Meanwhile, Asian states are equally turning to Central Asia in their search for energy resources and new markets. This dual dynamic is giving rise to closer and deeper ties in three key areas. As far as infrastructures are concerned, various Asian powers have adopted Silk Road policies that see Central Asia as a fundamental transit route for their long-haul connectivity projects. In the field of trade, Central Asia's exchanges with other Asian countries have been growing steadily since the 1990s, in some cases even coming to rival, in comparative terms, exchanges with the West. Lastly, in terms of multilateralism, Central Asia is increasingly enmeshed in a web of overlapping institutions with a strong Asian identity, coexisting with the region's Western institutional references. The article then problematizes this emerging pattern by sketching out some of the possible ramifications that could stem from the sustainment and consolidation of these trends for the international order and the global balance of power.

Abstract The occurrence of both natural and man-made disasters is inescapable, but the consequences for the lives of vulnerable communities can be mitigated. United Nation (UN) and organizations such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommend investing proactive rather than re-active actions in dealing with disasters. It is commonly understood that “$1 spent on risk reduction saves between $5 and $10 in economic losses from disasters.” Currently Central Asian countries including Kazakhstan have weak proactive support programs and disaster mitigation plans. Most of the support activities are post disaster. Proactive actions, monitoring and prediction analysis of the potential disasters in Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries require a multidisciplinary cooperative approach with applications of remote sensing sensor monitoring technologies. These require a permanent energy supply in various harsh environmental conditions. What advance energy storage systems are available and can be used for a Disaster Resilience programs? How can these energy storage systems be integrated into remote sensing sensor monitoring technologies? Our group of researchers is developing the multidisciplinary Disaster Resilience Institute (www.drinu.org) and Laboratory to Monitor Engineering Constructions (LaMEC, www.lamec.org) to work on proactive monitoring actions related to engineering facilities that are interconnected to surface and underground water resources such as bridges, dams, and reservoirs. We are looking for the cooperation in these areas and are convinced that success is presaged on a multidisciplinary approach.

Abstract The water availability in Kazakhstan is 37000 m3 per one km2 and 3650 m3 per capita a year, an amount that is lower than the world average (around 6000 m3) (Knoema, 2016). It is expected that water availability falls to 2300 m3 per capita in a year by 2030 (FAO, 2016a). Water pollution is a further problem for exploiting available water resources. In fact, 50–70% of surface water resources in Kazakhstan have been rated “polluted” and “highly polluted” in terms of ecological status (ICSD, 2016). Apart from that, water use efficiency remains very low. The average efficiency of canal water delivery systems is only 15–20% compared to 70–90% in most developed countries (FAO, 2016b). A number of institutional and policy measures have been implemented to enhance the sustainability of water resource use and water security; however, the country is still facing a number of problems of water use in a sustainable manner. This study provides stakeholders’ assessment of the critical factors that affect the sustainable management of water resources in Kazakhstan. The study rests on the results from the interviews that are further examined using the SWOC approach (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Challenges) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique. The study demonstrates and prioritizes 32 critical SWOC factors relevant to the sustainable management of water resources in Kazakhstan. The study also determines four key stakeholder groups with differing opinions regarding the SWOC factors, which could potentially impact final policy implementation. Creating a comprehensive regulatory framework alongside decentralising water management from state water authorities to community-based water-user associations as well as investment to innovative irrigation technologies are likely to contribute towards a more equitable and efficient water distribution.

This thesis analyzes the determinants of the life insurance demand in Kazakhstan. The aim of this study was to find how Kazakhs perceive life insurance as a market product and how the perception impacts the consumption pattern of life insurance. For this research, two methods of analysis were employed: quantitative and qualitative. In the first chapter, econometric tools were used to determine the change in the demand across individual characteristics such as age, gender, marital status, occupation and place of residence. Also, macrolevel determinants of demand such as average income and urbanization rate were determined. In the second and third chapters, in-depth interviews with representatives of local population and sales agents were used to determine cultural features of Kazakh society that serve as a barrier for the development of the life insurance market in Kazakhstan. Certain patterns of consumption are determined across macrolevel personal and characteristics in the first chapter. The explanation for these patterns are found further in second and thirds chapters. Strong influence of social norms on the way the product is perceived by Kazakhs. Apart from social norms, strong impact of historical experience is observed in the perception of life insurance. Local norms strongly impact the risk and death perception of Kazakhs that are central components for the realization of need for life insurance.

This study focuses on different modalities of social media trade in Kazakhstan and how sellers create trust online using platform features, personal skills and physical locations of stores associated with social media accounts. Researching this topic in Kazakhstan locates this study in a specifically interesting intersection of trade, technology, informality and trust. Social media trade is a part of electronic commerce that is new and technologically advanced type of business, however many traders work informally as they fail to meet legal norms as business registration, paying taxes and giving receipts. Just as individual traders poured to the streets in the period of perestroika, modern day small business owners have occupied social media and turned it into an electronic bazaar. As shops located at bazaars transfer their stores online, and traders learn new technology in order to increase their sales, this study challenges the notion of bazaars being static and backward. Driven by the question of trust building in a complex realm of electronic but yet informal trade, I focus on a concept of a “living account” that is coined by my ethnographic data (interviews, observations and social media content analysis). I explore different dimensions of trade both online and offline to understand how these realms are intertwined in the question of informality and trust. I argue that the "aliveness" of an account produced through regular contact allows sellers to create trust that results in a successful sale. So, as long as an account is perceived to be “living” the question of formal registration, taxes and receipts is not relevant to customers.

This thesis is an exploratory qualitative study of the culture of premarital dating and romantic relationships among urban Kyrgyz youth in the city of Bishkek. Drawing from focus group discussions and individual in-depth interviews with young people, I analyze socio-cultural norms and expectations regarding premarital relationships in Kyrgyz society, as well as present young urbanites’ experiences of these phenomena. I argue that dating and romantic relationships are socially approved practices in Kyrgyz society mainly because they are viewed as precursors to marriage – an important social institution. However, the approval comes with certain limitations – among them the most pronounced is condemnation of premarital sex in relation to women. While young men allegedly enjoy the freedom of their sexuality, young Kyrgyz women are strongly discouraged from engaging in premarital sex. Uyat – a local concept of shame is used as a mechanism of controlling correct gender performance, as well as an instrument of punishment for deviant behavior. Restrained by uyat, women are finding creative ways of upholding the social norms – their aim is neither subordination nor subversion, but rather finding new ways of operating in the given reality.

Wang, Di (2018) THE UNOFFICIAL RUSSO-QING TRADE ON THE EASTERN KAZAKH STEPPE AND IN NORTHERN XINJIANG IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY. Nazarbayev University, School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/3316
The Treaty of Kuldja (Ili) signed in 1851 between the Russian empire and the Qing empire marked the start of the official Russo-Qing trade in Xinjiang. This thesis aims to explore the generally neglected pre-1851 unofficial Russo-Qing trade on the Eastern Kazakh steppe and in Northern Xinjiang by examining the trade in three areas: Semipalatinsk, Tarbagatai and Ili. This pre-treaty era Russo-Qing trade was regarded as illegal on the Qing side but legal on the Russian side. By comparing the information from Chinese and Russian sources, this thesis argues that the original legal and official Kazakh-Qing trade established in the 1760s was gradually transformed into an unofficial Russo-Qing trade in the first half of the 19th century. Besides analyzing the motivation and the stance of the Russian empire and the Qing empire, this thesis highlights the role of individual actors such as merchants, nomads, government officials and border guards in forging the trade. This thesis also discusses the commodities of the trade, the myth of silver flow and the discovery of the dramatic price change in the year of 1840. The analysis of travelogues and quantitative archival data of the imports and exports of the Semipalatinsk custom post from the 1820s to the 1840s complement the existing scholarship on this topic. By discussing the above-mentioned themes, the author reaches the conclusion that the pre-Treaty era unofficial trade was already marked by established institutions and diverse commodities, though with a high degree of informality. The 1851 Treaty of Kuldja which officialized the Russo-Qing trade in Ili and Tarbagatai did not establish a new trade, but was a result of the pre-Treaty period unofficial trade and carried many characteristics of the pre-treaty era trade.

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/3323
The research represents a case study and explores Germany’s “soft power” strategy in Kazakhstan in terms of education and culture. Since no research has been conducted before on this matter, the author attempts to provide the key information of the strategy, by analyzing its features, actors and the role of the German diaspora. In terms of the conceptual framework, the research is based on Joseph Nye’s concept of “soft power” and its interconnection with the “public diplomacy”. The fieldwork results showed that German officials do not use so-called “soft power” term in their rhetoric, but there is German “cultural relations and education policy”. Moreover, the research describes the role of the state, non-state actors and also of the German diaspora, and their level of cooperation in Kazakhstan.

This thesis is an exploratory qualitative study into the recent revival of feminism which is now gaining its momentum in Kazakhstan, where several feminist unions and numerous individual activists publicly promote feminist ideas, advocate for gender equality and LBTIQ rights in the country. By drawing on in-depth interviews with the outspoken feminist activists, I posit that contemporary feminisms in Kazakhstan are now entering the stage of reflecting on their specific stance vis-à-vis the complex set of gender ideologies and practices concerning Central Asian women and their space in the society, ranging from (but not limited to) the system of patriarchy, controversial Soviet project of “women’s liberation,” more recent influences of Western neoliberalism and capitalism, and the dominant discourse of “Western feminism.” My research data demonstrate that by admitting the constructed, complex nature of contemporary Kazakhstani feminisms, my respondents move to the elaboration on the modalities of the movement’s further prospects, such as its grounding in Kazakh(stani) context, as well as closer
collaboration with other Central Asian feminisms which has the potential to form a particular local type of post-socialist feminisms, sensitive to and embedded in the region’s tangled geotemporal realities...

In 2016 archeologists discovered the medieval city of Ilibalyk in modern day
Kazakhstan. This new and exciting archeological excavation of the medieval archeological
site Ilibalyk reveals the presence of the Church of the East or the East Syriac Church in the region for the first time. The excavations during 2016 and 2017 at Ilibalyk revealed East Syriac Christian gravestones and a graveyard of the late 13th - early 14th century CE, revealing the presence of a Christian population in the late medieval city and in Central Asia in general. Based on analysis of the range of gravestones recovered during excavations at Ilibalyk, this thesis questions the extent to which the Christian communities were integrated into the multireligious society of Central Asia. The thesis examines this question through stylistic analysis of the medieval Christian gravestones and of the crosses engraved on them. This analysis provides us with an insight into how East Syriac Christians were integrated in the multireligious society of Ilibalyk, which was located in the Chagatai ulus. From this research of the uncovered archeological data, we can say that the Ilibalyk Christians, who developed their religious identity in a non-Christian environment, may have been not only well integrated in the socioreligious life of the Ilibalyk community, but also occupied a place in a wider Christian network in this region....

In the two decades since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the musical landscape in Kazakhstan has come to include diverse localized versions of global music. The alternative soundscape of modern Kazakhstan encompasses rhythmic electronic dance sounds, hard rock, romantic and mellow indie, harsh rap, experimental rock, and other genres. Modern musicians now use an electric version of a traditional instrument, the elektro-dombyra, to perform ethnic rock. The language of performance among musicians varies from Kazakh to Russian and English. One recent phenomenon in Kazakhstan is the emergence of ‘Q-pop’, which is largely modeled on K-pop and which is rapidly gaining popularity among the local audience. Many of these performers faced some criticism for their unconventional choices of instruments, genres, and visual images. This thesis addresses the questions of what strategies these musicians themselves use to claim authenticity, and how these strategies intertwine with local discourses of national
identity, language, and gender...

Critical literature on ageing and old age points to the pervasiveness of ageism, whereas aged people do not celebrate high social status in modern industrial capitalist societies. At the same time, anti-ageing discourses give the agency as well as place the responsibility to “fight” with ageing and old age on the aged people themselves. While above mentioned dictates are more or less global and can be applied to many modern societies, Kazakhstani societal and cultural patterns simultaneously dictate its own expectations regarding the limits, opportunities, and rights of aged people. Sociocultural expectations also greatly depend on gender....

The waste management system of Nur-Sultan is a large-scale complex that provides the services like waste collection, sorting, recycling and burying in the landfill. The main organizations that are directly involved in these processes are the Akimat (municipal government) for the Saryarka district of Nur-Sultan, LLP Clean City NC (private waste collection company), LLP Kaz Recycle Service (recycling facility) and LLP Nur-Sultan Eco-Landfill (a landfill for municipal solid waste and construction waste). Due to both recent urbanization as well as to a high level of consumption among city residents, the amount of waste is increasing in Nur-Sultan and the waste management organizations are under pressure to constantly increase their work capacity. In this thesis, the waste management system of Nur-Sultan will be examined primarily from the perspective of employees, as well as from the population of the city....

International students are generally neglected as a type of migrating population in the literature. However, building on transnationalism theory in migration studies, the present thesis demonstrates that current and former international students resemble modern transnational migrants. They meaningfully connect the country of study and origin and involve themselves in transnational practices...

Kumis, a beverage made with fermented mare´s milk, is a part of national cuisine, symbol of health, and unique cultural identity in modern Kazakhstan. It is also a part of the traditional cycle of horse husbandry and the modern small business production that thrives in the countryside around big cities. In my study, based on the in-person and online survey of kumis consumers and on in-depth interviews with kumis producers in the two major cities of Kazakhstan, Astana and Almaty, I explore the dynamics of kumis supply chain and customer behavior and discuss how modern-day city dwellers make choices about kumis consumption while imagining the landscape, seasonality, and “natural-ness” of kumis production....

During the socialist period, under the rule of Josip Broz Tito, Yugoslavia has experienced an unprecedented peaceful period that lasted for several decades, however, it was followed by the disastrous Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s. The breakup of the state was not peaceful, especially for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has gone through the ethnic conflict, four years of siege of its capital, and genocide of around 8000 Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica. An interesting phenomenon is that despite these horrors jokes related to these events are widespread in Bosnia. At first glance it seems that humor in such context sounds inappropriate, but jokes related to the tragic events of the 1990s are numerous.
A few years ago I came upon for the first time with the phenomenon of Bosnian humor. Specifically, I heard that people in Bosnia and Herzegovina tell jokes about the horrors they have lived through during the wars of the 1990s. While conducting a preliminary research one of the first jokes I found online was “How Auschwitz was better than Sarajevo?” and the answer is “At least there was gas.” The joke may raise moral concerns among outsiders, but it was, and still is, a normal phenomenon for people in Bosnia and Herzegovina to engage in self-deprecating humor. At the time, being unfamiliar with the humor research, it surprised me a lot. A layman, as I was one, usually assumes that horror and humor constitute conflicting mental states. That surprise rooted in my ignorance of the humor studies brought me to a current research.

Many people believe that shuttle trade does not exist anymore and it is a thing of the past. Shuttle trade as an activity in which individual peddlers buy goods abroad and import them for resale in local markets and street shops, was one of the main achievements that created millions of jobs and ensured relative stability at a time of uncertain 1990s. Today’s shuttle trade exists under the guise of various types of business enterprises and legalized entrepreneurship. Sometimes it is still the only income source for many households of post-Soviet Kazakhstan. This thesis asks what the effects of shuttle trade have been on the personal lives of merchant women in Kazakhstan. I focus on the narratives of women and their own evaluation of the impact of trading on their lives. This study focuses on the experience of the women who got involved in shuttle trade after the collapse of the Soviet Union and their perspective on that experience from today’s standpoint. It reveals the losses and challenges that women faced in their lives as merchants. This topic is interesting not only from the perspective of assessing the situation of free market trade activities after the USSR demise, but also from the perspective of analyzing the experience and stories of those merchant women. In this paper, women express their views and attitudes toward their business, life, work, family and also how their life perceptions changed over time. These women were the ones whom, with their hard work, physically created the capitalist market, sometimes without any knowledge and tools. Their contributions to the social and economic development of the country remain highly relevant. I find that despite benefits of shuttle trading for women including financial independence, freedom, and/or social influence, it has also significant costs and brings some regrets. By traveling the road from the small-scale petty trading to successful and legal business ownership, women traders contributed and in some ways shaped the market economy of post-Soviet Kazakhstan. This study will add value to the knowledge of shuttle trade process not from the economic perspective but from the socio-cultural sensitivity. It would be in interest to those who are interested in gender, sociology, culture, to learn the experience of merchant women from their own viewpoint t and understand the role of women in a patriarchal society as Kazakhstan.

While gender binarism and heterosexual relations are widely present in traditional art spaces
such as museums and art exhibitions in modern Kazakhstan, non-normative gender and sexual
behavior can rarely be seen there. Artists who post their visual works in social media compensate
for this lack of alternative depiction of gender and sexual minorities in the mainstream art
spaces. However, these artists remain largely understudied in the academic literature on gender
studies and visual culture in Central Asia. In this thesis, I contribute to this literature by studying
the depiction of gender and sexual nonconforming people in contemporary visual culture in
Kazakhstan’s social media. By analyzing the illustrations by three artists – Murat Dilmanov,
Daniyar Sabitov, and Veronika Fonova – I demonstrate the spectrum of diverse representation of
non-normative gender and sexual expression. First, I claim that Dilmanov’s political caricatures
offer a simplified heteronormative depiction of gay and effeminate men. In order to show that
the way the artist depicts queers in his illustrations are limited to a stereotypical image of gays, I
use Bakhtin’s concept of monoglossia. Second, I show that, in his collages, Sabitov creates a
utopian image of Kazakhstan where queers are well-integrated into a broader society; I explain
his project by using Munoz’s concept of queer futurity. I argue that Sabitov’s collages, although
offering a less stereotypical depiction of queer people, still imagine them within heteronormative
and assimilationist realm. Third, I claim that Fonova is an artist who (contrary to Dilmanov and
Sabitov) moves from a political and/or activist agenda and concentrates instead on the depiction
of the private life of queer people. By focusing on their romantic life in the context of a daily
routine, Fonova demonstrates the diversity of gender and sexual nonconformity as something
that exists naturally. It exists not as part of political activism, but rather as something that is
surrounded by what can be seen as queer boringness of everyday life. Thus, I show the
progression of gender nonconforming and/or homosexual people’s depiction in visual culture of
modern Kazakhstan moving from heteronormative stereotypical (Dilmanov) and assimilationist
(Sabitov) to non-heteronormative (Fonova) rhetoric.

This thesis examines the construction and expression of a queer identity on the example
of queer fiction written in Kazakh in modern Kazakhstan. A single work of fiction titled
“Renaissance”, and written by a young Kazakh man, who identifies himself as gay is analyzed in
connection to the platform, on which this work is created and disseminated. The work’s
connection to the notions of space and time is highlighted, in order to reveal the inner
complexities of the queer experience among the Kazakh speaking gay men in Kazakhstan.
The work and its sociocultural prerequisites are analyzed through the use of Foucauldian
notion of heterotopia. The effect that heterotopias have on identity is studied through the use of
Derridian grammatology and Deleuzian notion of rhizomatic connections. Reddit style forums
on the VK social media written by and for gay men is studied with the purpose of isolating and
examining various processes that are taking place within the Kazakhstani queer community.
These forums are then connected to the page, on which the work of fiction under study is
published. The thesis traces the metamorphoses of the main protagonist’s identity within the
story. These traces are found in the language of the text, as well as the interactions between
characters and the setting of the story. This analysis resulted in the understanding of queer
identity as a dynamic phenomenon.

On May 9, 1945, the Great Patriotic War ended, and the Soviet administration began to demobilize.
This marked the beginning of a transition from war to a peaceful life. This thesis investigatesthis
process as experienced and remembered by the surviving World War II veterans in Kazakhstan.
The project aims to understand how men and women returning from the front tried to manage and
organize their lives in post-war conditions. I argue that veterans experienced a poorly organized
demobilization process, shortage of food and consumer goods, as well as housing issues, but their
post-war financial hardships were compensated by the sense of the veterans’ special mission in the
post-war Soviet society and access to free education and employment. In the work, I also explore
inter-ethnic relations between Kazakhs and Slavs and conclude that the relationship was generally
peaceful, although not withoutoccasional misunderstandings. Thus, the Slavs, especially Russians,
were highlighted as an “older brother” with the knowledge of the Russian language opening doors
to better educational and employment opportunities and the status of a “cultured person”. At the
same time, some Kazakh soldiers admitted to recognizing themselves as better people – more
humane and benevolent than their materialistic Russian peers. The basis of this work is veterans’
recollections, their perceptions of the period, and their lived experiences. To collect and analyze
veterans’ memories I chose to conduct in-depth interviews

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/5444
Tourist traders emerged in the early 1990s as a predominantly female response to the collapse of
state systems, job cutbacks, shortages in commodities - the chaos that enveloped newly emerging
nation-states. There is still no reliable evaluation of Kazakhstani traders and their contribution to
the national economy. Yet, shuttle trading has and continues to impact the socio-emotional state
of families and traders. Through ethnographic fieldwork in the market of a small town Merken,
this thesis aims to pay homage to women, who relentlessly peddled for the sake of their families,
and to provide a personal description of trading biographies and relations showing the complexity
and embodied nature of this broad informal economy. First of all, ‘bazaars’ are extremely flexible
phenomena that could occur at any point in time and space, ignoring the geographically defined
premises of the markets. Shuttle traders could create a bazaar anywhere and carried the power of
creating multiple sources of income for others. Gender expectations and the negative connotation
of the bazaar created negative and conflicting pressure for women traders: women faced severe
work conditions at the same time that the significance of their labor was diminished. Trading also
swapped traditional gender roles in families because women were earning the household income
and gone for long periods of time; this created a sense of yearning for a mother in children.
However, trading provided women with tools to reclaim their connection to their children, too,
such as being able to provide for their well-being and education. Focus groups show that children,
too, have intense and changing emotional responses to their mothers’ trading career and are still
in the process of giving a more defined shape to their relationships with their mothers. Traders
themselves shared similar sentiments, which is currently helping them undo clusters of traumatic
and painful experiences of the past

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/5445
The thesis describes traditional medical practices in Kazakhstan. The research project
applies the Weberian concept of “legitimacy” to folk healing in the context of Kazakhstan. The
research project has several objectives. Firstly, the paper covers the historical and modern
representation of folk medicine by the state and Kazakhstani society along with the
commercialization process of folk healing. Secondly, it classifies different types of healers
providing their services and discusses the role of religion in Kazakhstan folk medicine. Lastly,
the analytical part of this project explains the dynamics behind the legitimization of folk medical
practices by healers, patients and the state. The project focuses on identifying the ways in which
traditional Kazakhstani healers wield legitimacy into their practices. The purpose of this thesis is
to analyze the legitimation strategies employed in non-biomedical healing practices in
contemporary Kazakhstan.
Folk medicine in Kazakhstan has a long history of different social and political periods that
have transformed it into its current shape. Through those events folk healing has become an
inseparable part of a Kazakh culture. The social perception is that this sector of medicine has a
huge potential to grow in the foreseeable future. There are different types of folk healers in
Kazakhstan that vary depending on their specialization. Although there are lots of similarities
among healers, different healers tend to use different techniques to legitimize their practices.
According to the results of the project, when deciding to approach a folk practitioner, the most
influential factor for the Kazakhstani society is the traditional authority of a certain healer.
Individual characteristics and the political implications also play a significant role in providing
legitimacy to folk healers, though they were not given as much emphasis by the healer respondents as legitimation through traditional knowledge.

Since 2012 on May 31, Kazakhstan commemorates the victims of the famine of the
1930s. Though there is a growing body of research on the famine of the 1930s in
Kazakhstan both locally and internationally, there is lack of research on the public
awareness of the famine and how it is perceived by the general, non-academic
audiences. This study is designed to contribute towards filling in this gap with a
focus on a specific group of the society: young people. Their perceptions are
investigated with the help of the opinion poll which can be considered as the first one
on the topic of the famine conducted among young people (aged 18 - 29). The study
argues that there is limited public discussion of the famine and seeks to understand
the relationship between the political discourse of the famine, alternative narratives of
the past and the perceptions young people have about the famine

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/5447
Keeping nonhuman animals in captivity has a long history, is performed in various forms, and
can be viewed from different perspectives. This work concentrates on the contemporary
zoological parks most of which represent themselves as conservational, scientific,
educational, and recreational institutes. At the same time, I hypothesize that zoological parks
are the co-products of capitalism and hierarchical structures where different living species are
differently prioritized. Moreover, some of the bodies at the zoo can be either silenced based
on their place in the hierarchy and the degree of their dependence or choose to be silent. I also
view zoological parks as socially constructed institutions that are managed and constructed
under the human perceptions and constructs of nature and nonhuman animals. To examine
these issues, I present the zoos as assemblages whose biotic and abiotic bodies create a whole
variety of affective interconnections. This thesis is based on my ethnographic fieldwork at the
Karagandy zoological park where I conducted observations and in-depth interviews. The main
question that I raise in my thesis is: How different elements of the Karagandy zoo assemblage
interact with each other, support the lives of nonhuman animals, create emotional bonds,
contradictions, and hierarchies? Thus, throughout my work, I bring up a range of questions
covering the interconnections between human and nonhuman worlds, animal conservation,
animal and working welfare, and the value of someone’s life. By accompanying my chapters
with small ethnographic stories and examples I try to give the voice to nonhuman animals
living in captivity and different silenced beings at the zoological park

As one of the new actors in the global higher education market, South Korea has enhanced its
international competitiveness over the last two decades. Education policies aimed at receiving
international recognition have positively affected the country's attractiveness to international
students. Exploring the case of Kazakhstani students in South Korea, I address the reasons and
motivations behind the students' decision whether to return to their home country or remain in the
host country. Building on Bourdieu's capital theory, this research examines how economic and
cultural capital accumulation may shape their choice of location after their studies in South Korea.
I argue that Kazakhstani students highly prioritize the pursuit of high-tech knowledge, skills and
economic factors (high salary) that drive them to stay in South Korea at least at the beginning of
their career.

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/5450
This thesis explores the experience of being an ethnic returnee, an individual “returning”
to the land where their ancestors had once migrated from. Return motivations, post-return
experiences, and transnational connections of Kazakh returnees are a vastly under-researched
area in the return migration literature. This thesis aims to answer three research questions: what
were the return motivations of Kazakh returnees migrating from Russia, Uzbekistan, Mongolia,
and China; why do returnees experience disappointment about moving to Kazakhstan; and how
does post-return transnationalism influence their life at the cultural homeland? The data draws
on 20 semi-structured interviews conducted online due to COVID-19 restrictions. The findings
indicate that returnees are driven to migrate to Kazakhstan because of challenges in their host
countries, but after arrival they experience linguistic difficulties, economic insecurity,
corruption, and negative attitudes from the local community. Such experiences produced
feelings of disappointment about their homecoming, which turns into feelings of not belonging
to one's ethnic homeland, Kazakhstan. In addition, the results indicate that regardless of Kazakh
returnees’ countries of origin, their post-return transnational ties with families and friends who
were left behind help Kazakh returnees to cope with feelings of disappointment about
homecoming

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/5451
The thesis explores the status quo of the Kazakh language in terms of corpus
linguistics. The project aims to survey the currently existing corpora of the Kazakh
language and contribute to the existing body through a more flexible and more
automatic way of corpus building and annotation. Upon the examination of the field,
it was determined that while there are some efforts to digitize the Kazakh language,
those projects are largely still being developed. They are conducted on various
scales — from small student projects to the projects led by Mozilla and big research
groups, like Apertium. Therefore, this project set out to attempt to build a corpus of
journalistic Kazakh language using neural networks for part-of-speech tagging. In
order to construct the corpus, news websites were used as a source, as they provide
a decent vocabulary range while remaining easily accessible. The project utilized a
series of small-scale Python programs to create the body of data to be annotated via
obtaining the text from the web pages. The final stage of the study involves using the
neural networks in order to assign the words their respective parts of speech. Neural
networks provide an automatable way of doing part-of-speech tagging that is faster
compared to humans, with an accuracy that can be almost equal to that of humans.
In addition, while using the neural networks is a known way to approach the tagging
and annotation, it has not seen use in Kazakh corpus linguistics as of yet. The final
model was able to assign the correct parts of speech to words with a reasonable
degree of accuracy, which could still be improved by providing a bigger sample of
training data. The project can be later utilized to build a more extensive corpus with
a high degree of automation, lowering the time expenses

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/5452
In the last couple of decades, the concept of the New Soviet Man and Woman has been
drawing the attention of scholars, who examined this concept from different ideological
and institutional perspectives. However, the place of children in this ideological project has
not been fully explored, yet the propaganda of the “New Soviet Man” encompassed not
only men and women but also, children. This study examines the process of upbringing
healthy and energetic Soviet children through analysis of Evgenii Radin’s works, the head
of the Department for the Protection of Children’s and Adolescents’ Health, who was
actively engaged in the promotion of the forest schools. The forest schools were medical
and educational facilities established after the Revolution and located at the outskirts of the
cities or near the forests, where children’s tenure lasted for the period of six months. Radin
considered the forest schools as a radical alternative to the secondary schools because they
entailed “total” control over the lives of the Soviet children for medical and pedagogical
experts employed at the forest schools. The isolation of the forest schools provided an
opportunity to nurture and educate children in a new environment, in which children were
exempt from the factors of external interventions. Through forest schools, Radin tried to
nurture The New Soviet Children by inculcating them a sense of collectivism and ensuring
their harmonic development, which perfectly aligned with the communist ideology.
However, by studying Radin’s works holistically, we find that his interests in the process
of upbringing healthy children goes back to the imperial period, when he was involved in
the survey that studies the factors that caused disenchantment among students of the higher
educational institutions. The examination of Radin’s analysis of this survey demonstrate
his criticism expressed towards traditional secondary educational institutions, the hostile
environment of which negatively affected the child’s personality, led to his subsequent
alienation from society and even to suicide. Radin proposed his own reforms the essence of iv
which ensured children’s harmonic development and inculcation of collectivism that would
contribute to the process of upbringing healthy children. Hence, we can see that the
identical concepts stood at the basis of the process of upbringing healthy children in two
different historical periods. Through examination of Radin’s both pre- and post Revolutionary works and interests, this study challenges the originality of the concept of
The New Soviet Child, proposed by Radin on the pages of his brochures. This study also
offers a glimpse into the functioning, schedule and subsequent fate of the forest schools in
Radin’s works, the overlooked topic in the historiography of the Soviet educational system.
After 1925, Radin became less enthusiastic about the forest schools and appealed to a
wider audience of the Pioneers, the vozhatye (pedagogues in Pioneer camps) and the
peasants. Hence, by delving into Radin’s post-1925 works, this study will try to find out
the causes of such sudden shift and see the extent to which the legacy of the forest schools
lived on in his post-1925 works

This study focuses on Kazakhstani art. It aims to comment particularly on the impact COVID 19 had on the artistic community, whose chance to earn income decreased with the introduction
of countrywide lockdown due to global pandemic. The emergence of an anti-crisis project Art
Bazaar in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan appeared as a response to the pandemic and a platform to help
not only Kyrgyzstan but Central Asian artists. Notably, Kazakhstani participants constitute a
majority of the participants in this initiative. I argue that Art Bazaar's online presence allowed
artists to continue earning income and enabled customers to acquire art pieces. Art pieces in
turn serve as the third animated body, allowing artists to connect with others, while COVID 19 serves as the backdrop and, at the same time, a subject for artists to convey political and
social messages. This study also offers an insight on how members' bonds expanded beyond a
feeling of connection to a Facebook group, and they formed unions to interact, encourage, and
network

In 1864 a revolt by Muslim communities of Xinjiang precluded for more than a decade
Qing presence in the region. The Muslim rebels eventually made attempts at establishing new
political entities throughout Xinjiang. The uprising placed the neighboring Russian empire,
whose Central Asian territories shared an extensive border with Xinjiang, in a sensitive
situation. This thesis aims to discuss Russian views and perceptions of the Muslim revolt and
its participants. In particular the research focuses on shedding light on what were some of the
strategies adopted by Russian regional authorities in Western Siberia and Turkestan general governorships with regards to the Qing loyalist forces, Muslim rebels, and refugees. The
research explores ethnic and religious policies established by colonel Kolpakovskii in the Ili
region and discusses diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Russian administration in
Turkestan. The research argues that the policies and measures adopted by regional Russian
administrations were flexible, prone to shifts as the Muslim revolt progressed, and were
influenced by a number of internal and external factors. Those include concerns regarding the
allegiances of Russia’s own Muslim population in the borderlands, the desire to maintain
favorable commercial relations with the Qing, to act as a neutral power and ultimate broker
between the Muslim rebels and the Qing loyalists, and finally to minimize British political
and economic influence in Central Asia.

The political power of the medieval ecclesiastical authorities and the Mamluk-Ilkhanate warfare between 1284 and 1304: comparative study of the Armenian apostolic church and the Assyrian apostolic church in Cilician Armenia and Ilkhanate (Unpublished master`s thesis). Nazarbayev University, Nur-sultan, Kazakhstan
http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/5600
The modern history often avoids researching the marginalized medieval Christian
religious institutions due to the lack of their political significance. However, the medieval
accounts present the information about their significant role in the Mongol conquest of the
Mamluk Sultanate. From the one hand, the study of the ecclesiastical representatives of the
Assyrian Apostolic Church in the Mongol court is one of the underexplored topics in the
medieval history of Central Asia and Middle East. Morgan and Grousset explored the
significance of the Nestorian authorities in the court as a matter of the personal favorability of
khans, however, the effect of the Mongol conquest to the power of Christians in Ilkhanate was
undefined. Russell tried to examine this connection; however, her paradigm lacks scientific
proofs and proper methods of analysis. On the other hand, the studies of the Armenian
Apostolic Church were better developed. Ghazarian analyzed the effects of the Latin-Armenian
encounters to the Armenian domestic politics. Dashdonbog explored how the Mongol Armenian relationships affected the institutional power of the Armenian Church. However, the
authors fail to examine the question of why the Armenian Church became one of the most
significant religious entity among marginalized Christian religions in the Middle East. This
comparative study explores the relationships between the Mamluk-Ilkhanate warfare during
1284 and 1304 and the political power of the Nestorian and Armenian clergies in Ilkhanate and
Cilician Armenia. The main argument is that the political power of the Nestorian and Armenian
ecclesiastical authorities was damaged by the Mongol-Mamluk warfare between 1284 and
1304. In particular, apart the military damages of the warfare, the consequences of Islamization
of ilkhans and reciprocity with Catholics became significant factors that explain the downward
trend in political power of the Christian clergies in Cilician Armenia and Ilkhanate. Mainly,
these factors were the intentional discourses to stimulate the military capabilities of the
Armenians and Mongols through the attraction of the domestic and foreign alliances against vii
Mamluks. Furthermore, the study will also prove that the political ties between Armenian kings
and ecclesiastical authorities affected the survival of the Armenian Church and localization of
the Nestorian clergy. Hereby, the institutional power, political positions in the courts, patronage
and social status as well as repressions and institutional devastations are the main variables that
determine the political power of the ecclesiastical authorities in Ilkhanate and Cilician
Armenia. The thesis mainly explores the periods of Lewon II and Hetum II reigns in Cilician
Armenia; and simultaneously evaluates the period from Arghun khan’s reign to Ghazan khan’s
rule in Ilkhanate. The study uses content and linguistic-political discourse analyses as major
methodological tools. The research is based on Syriac, Latin, Armenian and Persian primary
sources that were conducted between 13th and 16th centuries. In particular, the diplomatic
reports, correspondences between rulers, ecclesiastical and Islamic chronicles will be evaluated
throughout the study. Hopefully, this paper will contribute to the political, military and
religious history of the medieval Middle East, Ciscaucasia and Central Asia

This article presents an ethnographic study of Bosnian humour during the siege of Sarajevo. The siege of Sarajevo, which followed the collapse of Yugoslavia, lasted four years. Despite the atrocities and war crimes committed against the residents of Sarajevo during this period, they are known for the spirit they demonstrated, and humour was a crucial element of this spirit. On the basis of two-month fieldwork in Sarajevo, I demonstrate how Bosnians employed humour to comment on this traumatic event, made sense of it, and coped with the experience. Although humour under extreme conditions is mainly viewed as a coping mechanism, by exploring the origins of Bosnian humour and stereotypes about Bosnians, I demonstrate that a notable humorous response to the traumatic events of the 1990s was more than a coping mechanism or just a response to this particular war. As I argue, a humorous attitude toward life in Bosnia belongs to people’s identity; it has developed historically as a response to the sufferings of a peripheral group in the region and, as a result, has become a cultural artifact belonging to Bosnians’ ethnic consciousness. In their attempt to preserve a sense of normalcy and restore dignity during the siege, Sarajevans continued to engage in their traditional humour, as doing
otherwise would mean they had lost control over who they were.

Ethnographies and popular belief posit that women dominate as pilgrims in
Islamic shrine pilgrimage in Kazakhstan. This thesis attempts to examine the larger
phenomenon of female pilgrim majorities in Islamic shrine pilgrimage and what factors
are responsible for it by focusing on a case study of shrine pilgrimage at Aisha Bibi
shrine in Kazakhstan as recorded through fieldwork. Islamic shrine pilgrimage first
developed through Sufi orders and were a tangible mark of Islam in newly converted
lands. Over the years, it has faced recent challenges to its orthodoxy yet it still remains
popular with Muslims around the world, particularly women. This thesis finds female
predominance in modern Islamic shrine pilgrimage as the result of not only the unique
historical and political particularities specific to each host country, such as the impact of
Soviet atheism and modern Kazakhstani nation building in developing Kazakhstani
shrine pilgrimage, but also of broader social traits of shared by women across the world,
which is widely indicative of women’s role in today’s global societies.

This study aims to investigate the transformations of ethnic identity of three
generations of Kazakhstani Poles and their ancestors who were deported from Ukraine to
Kazakhstan in the 1930s. Deportation and Sovietization led to the impoverishment of ethnic
identity, therefore in independent Kazakhstan Poles had to look for new sources of
identification. One the base of preserved ethnicity Poles pursue two opposite trends: the
reconstruction of identity on the basis of preserved ethnicity or try to distance themselves
from it by assimilation. The base of the research is collections of memoirs and fieldwork data
in the village Kamenka in North Kazakhstan. Thesis uses the generational approach to show
how the boundaries of ethnic identity have been changed inside the community. Using this
approach, we emphasize the importance of historical memory. We cannot exclude the
historical narrative and use only recollections to save the objectivity of the presented facts,
recollections show the transmission of specific characteristics and their erasing from
generation to generation

In this research, I analyze the role of batyr images in the nation-building process in
contemporary Kazakhstan. In particular, I focus on the batyrs as ideological personages who
previously were considered historical figures and literary heroes. I demonstrate how the
government instrumentalized the batyr images, which position batyrs as defenders of the Kazakh
state and Kazakh people through the idea of uninterrupted continuity of Kazakh sovereignty.
After a thorough analysis of different approaches to nation-building in Kazakhstan, I argue that
batyr commemoration is a part of a recent trend in the Kazakh ethnonational way of
nation-building. Similarly, I show the development of the batyr cult in pre-modern times. After
considering the nineteenth-century ethnographic sources, folklore works, and the Soviet period
of batyr commemoration, I show how the batyr cult changed over time. Additionally, I consider
three main levels involved in the nation-building and batyr reimagination process in Kazakhstan:
national, local, and grassroots levels, and analyze the role of every layer in this process.

When shared ethnicity is not enough for co-ethnic migrants to adapt and
integrate into the co-ethnic society, considerations of different post-migration
adaptation methods and identity formation among Kazakh 'repatriates' of different
origins are essential. The thesis focuses on the adaptation strategies and identity
formation of Xinjiang Kazakhs. It examines how the social/cultural capital gained in
China helps Xinjiang Kazakhs find jobs in local Kazakh society and form their
identity. I implement the survey questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. As an
insider, I also use the semi-autoethnography method partly supplement the main
results. The main finding indicates that, for Xinjiang Kazakhs, Chinese language
skills, social networks, and knowledge gained from China or related to Chinese
culture, as their unique cultural and social capital, help them adapt to local
Kazakhstan society and help them to find a job. The secondary finding shows that
Xinjiang Kazakhs have a hybrid identity; their perceptions of their homeland are torn
between their birthplace in China and their living place in Kazakhstan. While some
still struggle with feeling 'in-between,' many of them create the 'third' space, defining
themselves as 'global citizens

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/6291
The Korean community of Kazakhstan had formed as a result of the initial migration from
the Korean peninsula to the Russian Far East at the end of the 19th century and further forced
relocation to Central Asia ordered by Stalin in 1937. These Koreans speak Russian as their first
language and give their children Russian names. They are dispersed over the vast territory of
Kazakhstan and represented in various professional fields. Although today this ethnic community,
accounting to over 100,000 people, is represented by the fifth generation of Koreans, in the official
sources this ethnic group is referred as the ‘Korean diaspora’.
This thesis argues that the Korean community of Kazakhstan doesn’t necessarily fits into
the official narrative of diasporic identity as defined by scholarly literature or the officials of
Kazakhstan and South Korea. Instead, this community demonstrates a distinctive distancing from
diasporic claims and stances articulated by a small minority of the Korean community i.e., the
Association of Koreans of Kazakhstan. This research project attempts to understand the reasons
for such distancing from their ethnic community in Kazakhstan and motivation to reconnect with
South Korea as their perceived ancestral homeland.
This thesis is mainly drawn on ethnographic interviews to provide a “bottom-up”
perspective from the diasporans themselves. These interviews then are compared with the official
rhetoric circulated by national information agents, the Embassy of South Korea in Kazakhstan,
and the Associations of Koreans of Kazakhstan. The findings of this research suggest that diasporic
boundaries within the examined community are loosening due to various factors such as forgetting
of their native language, blurring of collective memory, high rate of intermarriage as well as the
economic and technological development. Instead, the Korean community engages in
iii
transnational practices with their perceived historic homeland: South Korea. These transnational
practices, that have been recently expanding include educational and labor migration and
associated with it financial and cultural remittances.

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/7142
The current work attempts to investigate the concept of heteroglossia and its sonic representation in Kazakhstani`s metal subculture. Heteroglossia is a combination of voices that we consciously and subconsciously derive from our environment, that impact our daily communication. In order to move beyond conventional divisions of language and music, both are treated as communication within a soundscape, i.e. everything an ear is exposed to, and analyzed in terms of frequency and dynamics content. Overall, the paper attempts at uncovering the local heteroglossia that comes to define the common footing of the subculture, establish the universal and canon characteristics of metal sound, and showcase the technologically mediated processes that drive this heteroglossia`s expression within a local metal soundscape. In order to achieve this, I have conducted fieldwork, engaged in spectral and dynamics analysis of the locally produced music, and led a personal project. The results of the fieldwork indicate that the underlying common footing of the community is the concept of authenticity, which implies both non-conformity to the mainstream, and conformity to metal canons. Sonically, non-conformity to the mainstream is expressed through the inclusion of the local instrumentations and vocalizations, and creative and pragmatic decisions behind them. The conformity means the inclusion of distorted guitars and fast paced live-sounding drums. Such sonic mix presents a challenge to the clear expression of the local voices within global ones necessary for the convection of certain communicative purposes, since distorted guitars create spectral masking, obstructing audibility and clarity of other instruments and vocals. Resolving this issue falls on the sound engineer. Overall, the balanced expression of the local heteroglossia, i.e. a unique/authentic local metal soundscape, is a technologically mediated process, where the pivotal role is taken by a sound engineer, who shapes/alters/molds the soundscape to covey certain communicative functions and introduces his/her own voices, i.e. creative and pragmatic decisions.

Contemporary heritage practices are largely framed by official discourses rooted in definitions that
overemphasize materiality. This thesis project aims to explore a more nuanced way of approaching
heritage through the lens of critical heritage studies that posits heritage ultimately to be not primarily
an object or site but rather about people and how people ‘use’ the past to help them address certain
concerns in the present. The study focuses on grassroots activism around the Arkharly rock art site,
revealing the motivations behind their participation and identifying factors that facilitated their
success. This heritage movement was essentially a set of actions and practices through which people
attempted to address current social issues in Kazakhstan to navigate change. The preservation
movement itself was a practice of making meaning, which also fostered well-being, social bonding,
and the creation of identities.

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/7186
Jeans are often seen as one of the most iconic symbols representing the Westernization and
growing consumerism of Soviet society during late socialism. While the existing studies on the
role of Western culture’s consumption in the Soviet context have problematized this
understanding, they focused primarily on the metropolitan or Western regions of the Soviet Union.
The present thesis aims to fill in this research gap by adding a republican perspective from Soviet
Kazakhstan. Using jeans as an object of analysis, this paper explores local practices of Western
goods consumption and its meanings in relation to the global, Soviet, and local culture contexts.
Based on the content analysis of local periodicals, Republican Communist Party archival data,
memoirs and interviews, this thesis argues several things. Firstly, the influence of Western culture
on local society was quite limited, much of it due to the provincial position of Soviet Kazakhstan
in terms of geographical remoteness from the 'West', and its lower position within the hierarchy of
the Soviet system of distribution. Secondly, instead of restricting the appeal of jeans to their
Western identity, this research points out the Soviet-informed use and locally embedded value
ascribed to jeans, which suggests not the Westernization, but rather, cultural hybridization of late
Soviet society.

Ethnographic findings of Russian colonial representatives are the main sources for studying the Steppe inhabitants from the time of their first contact with the Russian Empire until the Bolsheviks came to power in 1917. Generally, such ethnographic accounts bring biases and prejudices to describing the nomads’ traditions and mores, portraying them as “backward people”, who need to be civilized according to “European standards”.
By implementing content method analysis, my research paper aims to scrutinize the extent of partiality, inaccuracies, and contradictions between different ethnographic narratives to learn more about the Kazakhs of the 19th century, the time of the intensive incorporation of the Steppe in the Russian Imperial colonial system.

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/7198
The present thesis examines the transmission of memory and political implications of victimized identity in Azerbaijan. It focuses on the strategies of victimization that shape society’s discourse of Nagorno-Karabakh, which in turn underpins national identity. Collective remembrance strategies place Azerbaijanis at a point of impasse in relation to the conflict and pose a further obstacle to post-war peace negotiation, thus contributing to the intractability of the conflict. Using ethnographic interviews and incorporating evidence from official government bodies, this study demonstrates that the Azerbaijani discourse on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has been articulated through strategies of self-victimization that are transmitted through collective memory. These strategies function in two directions: selective and biased information-processing, justification and rationalization of negative group behavior, self-pity, and denial are directed at the in-group; whereas attribution of blame, moral superiority and paternalism, and moral disengagement are addressed to the out-group. By analyzing the disparate treatment of the Sumgait pogroms and the Khojaly massacre in collective memory, this study offers empirical evidence that the Azerbaijani discourse selectively focuses on particular events and builds on the memory narrative in a way that fits its self-victimization framework. The institutionalization and widespread remembrance of the Khojaly massacre further solidifies this aspect. This paper further argues that the government instrumentalizes victimized memory abroad as a political currency and domestically to divert attention from its own wrongdoings, such as lack of freedoms. Finally, it points out the importance of memory in conflict resolution and that a young society becoming more and more disaffected by protracted conflict can lead to disengagement, instead of the active participation of civil society needed to work towards a stable and lasting peace.

My thesis project is a combination of a comparative analysis of the two novels, Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita and Orhan Pamuk’s The Museum of Innocence, and a social-anthropological survey of the visitors of the Museum of Innocence located in Istanbul, which is constructed in tandem with the novel of the same name, about the agency of objects exhibited in the museum. My primary focus is the obsession of the two protagonists, Humbert Humbert and Kemal, towards their love interests, Lolita and Füsun, which is manifested in the forms of art that the protagonists create after losing their beloved ones. I apply psychoanalytical literary criticism, the theory that provides deeper insights into characters, themes, and symbolism, to analyze the protagonists’ obsessions. In my psychoanalytical literary analysis, I rely on Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, and Irvin Yalom’s theories and readings because they represent major eras in the history of psychoanalysis such as classical, structuralist, and existentialist psychoanalysis, respectively. Moreover, I provide an anthropological and historical overview of exhibiting collections in museums which is a true demonstration of the agency of things, the theory that I apply when I evaluate the answers that I acquired from the survey I conducted in Istanbul. I believe my work is important because it shows how the obsessions of the novels’ protagonists can be viewed through the lens of three major psychoanalysts’ theories and the theory of agency of objects.

The
1920s 30s, as it will be later described in more detail, were the times of
important political and ideological changes in Kazakhstan. These changes were
reflected in the dynamics of official party rhetoric on different issues, the political
landscape o f Kazakhstan cleansed from the “enemies of the people and changing
policies. Kazakh orthography based on Latin script that was used from 1929 to 1940
was also undergoing notable changes and reforms: the newspapers from the early
1930s and the late 1930s h ave quite notable differences in spelling This decade
witnessed particularly important changes in the nationalities policies of the Soviet
Union, which are often interpreted and summarized as a shift from indigenization,
affirmative action, and regional r ecognition to consolidation as a Soviet nation and
Russification.

Research surrounding the Republic of Kazakhstan foreign policy often assumes the state’s capture by or capitulation to foreign forces, which lead to further conclusions regarding the extent of Kazakhstan’s sovereignty. Similar claims have also abounded in other research focused upon middle power states – namely, that they do not execute their foreign policy on an independent basis or from endogenous stakeholders. The present thesis instead argues that the Republic of Kazakhstan’s continued use of multivectorism between its partners, large and small, by identifying strategies commonly used with major powers in its treatment of middle and smaller powers. The study period covers the period of Kazakhstan’s independent foreign policy from independence to roughly 2005, and it examines aspects of how its multivector strategy was used and evolved during that time. Through examination and coding of archival materials drawn from the National Archives of the Republic of Kazakhstan, multivectorism is demonstrated to be a prevailing force for the country’s foreign policy and not a bellwether technique deployed against greater powers.

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/7203
Aqbïlek is one of the first and most innovative novels in Kazakh literature. In this novel, Aimauytov merges Kazakh oral literary genres with novel form. This research looks at the style of Aqbïlek and its continuity with pre-existing Kazakh oral literary forms. Analyzing the Aimauytov’s use of stylistic features of oral epic poems, such as grammatical parallelism, end-rhyme, alliteration, the use of formulaic systems and similes, I argue that Aimauytov uses Kazakh oral literary techniques to adapt the novel form. Aimauytov also integrates Kazakh oral literary genres, such as körïsü and joqtau into the plot of the novel, to emphasize the alienation of Aqbïlek from the society and her final reintegration. Aimauytov uses stories of Äldekei, which imitate šešendik söz, to offer a social critique of the corruption and oppression that was enabled by the rich and influential Kazakh men. Having been banned shortly after its publication, Aqbïlek was subject to little scholarly investigation up until this day. This research, with its focus on the stylistic aspects of the novel, contributes to both the knowledge on Aqbïlek as well as Kazakh literary scholarship on early Kazakh novels.

My interest in Amangeldy Imanov stems from reading the edited volume on The Central Asian Revolt of 1916 and attending history classes during my Master of Arts in Eurasian Studies program.1 I was particularly drawn to the topic of national heroes, specifically what makes them “national” (natsional’nyi) and/or “people’s” (narodnyi/khalyq). The figure of Amangeldy Imanov drew my attention because Amangeldy was both a leader of the uprising of 1916 in the in Turgay Steppe and a celebrated national hero in Soviet and later post-Soviet Kazakhstan. The people’s batyr, organizer of the national liberation uprising of the Kazakh people in 1916 against tsarism, the legendary hero of the Kazakh people, and an active participant in the establishment of Soviet power in Kazakhstan are all descriptions of the same person. How does one retain the status of a hero in three different historical periods was the question I asked myself.

Absadikova, I. (2023). Food culture of contemporary Koreans in Kazakhstan. School of Sciences and Humanities
http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/7210
Food is one of the most significant aspects of Korean diaspora culture in Kazakhstan and
is an important element of traditions, yet little is known about the food culture of the Koreans of
Kazakhstan. Previous studies concerned such topics as the history of deportations, language, and
identity, but food culture has been poorly studied. This research aims to unpack the contemporary
food culture of the Koreans in Kazakhstan, and to identify the influence of local culture and the
current popularization of South Korean culture on Kazakh Koreans’ food practices. The results of
this study show that there is a unique ‘taste’ of Korean food that they say distinguishes them from
other nationalities in Kazakhstan; there is a local ‘taste’ that they incorporated into their daily
cuisines and small ceremonies, which showed how nativized people are to the region; and there is
a new South Korean ‘taste’ that they are nowadays implementing to their food culture, thus
increasing their cultural capital. Despite this variety of options, the main traditional ceremonies of
Koreans are prepared only with traditional dishes that have specific meanings, and such tradition
is continued and respected by all generations.

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/7329
This dissertation traces the history of national ideas in Māwarāʾ al-Nahr and Khurāsān, later known as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan, from the margins. This study follows the transformations of ideas of differences from the early nineteenth century when tribal, clan, sectarian, and regional affiliations prevailed in Māwarāʾ al-Nahr and Khurāsān to the time when Uzbek elites and Soviets in Bukhara, Khwārazm, and Russian Turkistan, and Pashtun nationalist elites in Kabul, laid the foundation of ethnonational-territorial identities of “Uzbek,” “Tajik,” and “Afghan,” and enforced boundaries between them. Furthermore, this dissertation pays particular attention to the de-Persianization projects (in the Bukharan People’s Soviet Republic/later Uzbek and Tajik SSRs and Afghanistan), which met with the insubordination of Tajiks.
The existing literature on nation-formation in Central Asia and Afghanistan is either written or indirectly influenced by elite sources. The prevalence of methodological nationalism has contributed to the reification of state-led and elitist nationalisms bearing the interests of the ruling groups in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan. Consequently, non-dominant/marginalized groups are represented as either passive or non-existent. Elite nationalism, backed by methodological nationalism, has contributed to the misrepresentation, misinterpretation, and erasure of the history of non-dominant/subaltern groups in the official national historiographies and politics of Māwarāʾ al-Nahr and Khurāsān (later Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan). This dissertation aims to better understand “non-elite/non-dominant nationalisms” in these countries by bringing enormous materials to light, arguing that it is the elites’ manipulation and control of state resources, media, statistics, and their suppression of non-dominant languages and non-dominant language groups that ensure the triumph of “majority-formation” and early nationalization projects in Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. This dissertation approaches Tajik national consciousness from the position of “subalternity,” considering that Tajiks have been subjects of Uzbek and Afghan khanates for centuries and distinguishes Tajik consciousness from the formation of the Tajik SSR. It is also the dominance of pro-Uzbek Khujandī elites throughout the history of the Tajik SSR and their failure to promote the Tajik cause addressing the interests of Tajiks of the Uzbek SSR and Afghanistan, which adds to the marginality of the Tajik cause. Among other factors, the territorial and ideological constraints imposed by the Soviet regime, the indifference of Khujandī elites to the Tajik cause, and de-Persianization policies of the Uzbek SSR and Afghanistan contributed to the failure of Tajik national consciousness. The comparative and transnational perspective not only helps us rectify
iii
Anglo-Russian historiographies, which often separates Afghanistan from Central Asian studies but also challenges elitist historiographies that reduce discussions on the Tajik people to the territory of Tajikistan, leaving off the Tajiks of Uzbekistan and Afghanistan unattended.
Moreover, this study will place nationalist movements in broader historical and geographical contexts to explain how Tajik national consciousness failed and how Afghans and Uzbeks met with relative success. Furthermore, drawing upon the extensive research of primary sources such as court chronicles, local histories, Western travelogues, and the writings of leading pioneers of nationalism Maḥmūd Ṭarzī, Ṣadr al-Dīn ʿAynī, and ʿAbd al-Raʾūf Fiṭrat, this dissertation argues that the position of indigenous elitist sources (be it the feudal or nationalist one) towards non-dominant group is indistinguishable from the ruling class, pushing non-dominants to the margins. It is in European sources, in contrast to Edward Said’s notion of Orientalism, that non-dominant groups find a voice at times.

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/7398
Chinese migrants are widespread all over the world, but in recent years their footprints have begun to reach Central Asia, a destination mainly for ethnic minorities migrants from Xinjiang. Especially after the Belt and Road Initiative, the number of Han Chinese migrants in Kazakhstan has become apparent. However, the appearance of Han Chinese migrants is discussed in terms of China's expansion, and the resulting fear makes people speculate about the purpose of these Chinese migrants. This research attempts to respond to the suspicions of local people through direct communication with Han Chinese migrants. It is argued in this study that the large number of Han Chinese migrants in Kazakhstan should not be discussed as a homogeneous migrant group as shown in the previous literature but as more specific and independent migrant individuals. It is founded that the Han Chinese migrant group in Kazakhstan is composed of self-employed traders, company expatriates, and students. Han Chinese migrants in Kazakhstan possess three common characteristics that they do not speak Kazakh but some with Russian speaking ability, seldom form contact networks with local people, and they only choose to live in Kazakhstan for a short time. In addition, the Han Chinese migrants also show diverse and independent motivation for their migration decision. Basically, they are driven by the Belt and Road Initiative and attracted by the economic benefits in Kazakhstan. Furthermore, their migration decision is the representation of their personal migratory agency and the social change between these two countries.

http://nur.nu.edu.kz/handle/123456789/7399
Gender policy is known to be an important part of the nation-building processes of countries
all around the world, and Kazakhstan is no exception. Overview of the history of gender in
Central Asia in the pre-Soviet period and during the Soviet Union showed that it was Soviet
authorities who introduced the first gender policy to the Kazakh steppe. With the arrival of
the Soviet power, Kazakh and Central Asian women became objects of a national and
political agenda, and such an approach survives up to the present. Present study is an attempt
to analyze state-level discourse on gender through state policy documents, track the changes
in discourse with regard to political context, and identify its images and concepts. Analysis of
state-level discourse is finished with the discussion of “spaces of silence”, certain spots that
are “absent” in discourse on gender. At the same time, this research looks at alternative
discourses on gender on the example of female activists of Kazakhstan, who “fill in” the
silences in official state discourse and find their own place and position on the grounds of
their civic and human rights. Special attention is given to the protests of mothers of multiple
children, rallies of women against the increase of retirement age and peaceful assemblies for
women’s rights. The main contribution of this work is the discussion of how women activists
use the existing gender policies and discourses as strategic recourses to achieve their goals
and raise different questions of interest to different groups.
